Product description

Calvez Bobinet Hanami Cabernet Franc 2023 is a natural red wine from the Saumur region of France's Loire Valley. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc sourced from multiple organically farmed parcels, this cuvée was created in 2012 as a "springtime wine" meant for drinking young. Calvez Bobinet Hanami Cabernet Franc 2023 undergoes a combination of whole-bunch and destemmed carbonic maceration before aging in concrete tanks. The tuffeau limestone soils of Saumur contribute mineral undertones to the wine's juicy, fruit-forward profile. Bottled with minimal intervention, it reflects the domaine's focus on freshness and approachability.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine Calvez Bobinet

Sébastien Bobinet began learning winemaking at age seven, helping his grandfather tend vines and work in the cellar. After pursuing other careers—including a stint in glassmaking—he returned in 2002 to take over 1.8 hectares of vineyards and a tuffeau cave cellar from his maternal grandparents. The decision to farm organically came immediately, shaped by the influence of Olivier Cousin, a pioneering natural winemaker in nearby Anjou.

Émeline Calvez arrived at the domaine in 2011. A former professional dancer whose career ended due to injury, she retrained as a sommelier and spent a year traveling French wine regions, working harvests and learning winemaking firsthand. Meeting Sébastien changed her trajectory once more; she became his partner in both life and wine production.

Today the couple farms approximately 6.5 hectares across multiple parcels around Saumur, Dampierre, and Souzay. Sébastien manages the vineyards while Émeline handles winemaking in their spectacular cave cellar carved 500 meters into the limestone cliffs at Beaulieu. Their collaboration has established Calvez Bobinet among the most respected natural wine producers in the Loire.

Hanami, meaning "flower viewing" in Japanese, was born in 2012 from the couple's desire to create an early-drinking, aromatic Cabernet Franc. The wine showcases their approach: partial carbonic maceration to emphasize fruit and aromatics, aging in concrete rather than new oak, and bottling without filtration or significant sulfur additions. It represents the accessible, bistro-ready side of their portfolio.

The domaine's range spans easy-drinking cuvées to more structured wines requiring cellar time. Beyond Hanami, they produce Piak! from multiple varieties, Les Gruches (a barrel-aged Chenin Blanc), and several single-parcel Cabernet Francs including Amatéus Bobi and Echalier.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

The Loire Valley traces the course of France's longest river from the Atlantic coast deep into the country's interior. Saumur occupies a central position within this vast wine region, where the Anjou appellation transitions eastward into Touraine. Viticulture here dates to at least the early medieval period, with winemaking traditions shaped by centuries of monastic cultivation and royal patronage.

Tuffeau limestone defines Saumur's landscape. This soft, white stone underlies the vineyards and forms the dramatic cliffs along the river where many producers, including Calvez Bobinet, have carved their cellars. These underground caves maintain constant temperatures around 54°F year-round, providing ideal conditions for natural winemaking without climate control. The same limestone contributes distinctive chalky minerality to wines grown in its soils.

Cabernet Franc thrives throughout Saumur and the neighboring Saumur-Champigny appellation. The grape finds ideal conditions in the region's maritime-influenced continental climate: warm enough summers to achieve ripeness, cool enough nights to preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Compared to Cabernet Franc from warmer climates, Loire versions tend toward lighter body, brighter acidity, and more pronounced herbal and floral character alongside red fruit.

The region produces both red and white wines of note. While Cabernet Franc dominates red production, Chenin Blanc is the signature white variety, capable of producing everything from bone-dry still wines to rich sweet styles and traditional-method sparkling wines including Crémant de Loire.

Saumur has become a stronghold for natural winemaking in France. The region's relatively dry climate reduces disease pressure, making organic and biodynamic viticulture more practical. Pioneering producers have built a community here that champions minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.
