Product description

Gut Oggau Emmeram Gewürztraminer 2022 stands as one of the few single-varietal wines in this Austrian estate's portfolio. Produced by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe in Burgenland's Oggau village, this 100% Gewürztraminer comes from 40-year-old vines planted in limestone and sand soils, yielding just 1-2 tons per hectare. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and given brief skin contact before pressing. Gut Oggau Emmeram Gewürztraminer 2022 ferments spontaneously in used 500-liter barrels and ages for 12 months without bâtonnage. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no sulfur added.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck founded Gut Oggau in 2007 after acquiring an abandoned 17th-century winery overlooking Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Eduard had worked in conventional winemaking with his father in Styria; Stephanie's family operated Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the region. The estate had been untended for approximately 20 years—a circumstance that proved beneficial, as chemical residues had cleared from the soils, enabling immediate conversion to biodynamic practices. Today, Gut Oggau maintains full Demeter certification across roughly 25 hectares, with vineyards grazed by sheep, enriched by cover crops, and partly worked by horse to minimize soil compaction.

The estate's concept revolves around a fictional family. Each wine represents a family member with a distinct personality, illustrated by artist Jung von Matt. Three generations comprise the lineup: children (Theodora, Atanasius, Winifred) from younger vines on gravel soils yield lighter, more energetic wines. Parents (Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine) come from warmer, sun-exposed sites producing fuller-bodied cuvées. Grandparents (Mechthild, Bertholdi) derive from the oldest vines and receive the most traditional treatment.

Emmeram occupies the parent generation—described as a "bird of paradise" and globetrotter with a charming, exotic personality. He is the son of Mechthild and Bertholdi, brother to Joschuari and Timotheus. Unlike most Gut Oggau wines, which are field blends, Emmeram is a single-varietal bottling: 100% Gewürztraminer from a dedicated plot. The brief skin contact before pressing allows the variety's aromatics to express fully while maintaining dry balance and finesse. Annual production across all Gut Oggau wines averages 40,000 bottles.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland occupies Austria's eastern flank, bordered by Hungary and shaped by the expanse of the Pannonian Plain. Covering approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, this is Austria's second-largest wine region and its warmest, a climate that has historically favored red wine production. Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), one of Europe's largest steppe lakes, defines the local viticultural character, moderating temperatures and creating humidity that influences everything from dry wine production to the botrytized dessert wines for which the area is celebrated.

The village of Oggau sits on the lake's western shore within the Neusiedlersee zone. Soils here range from gravel deposits near the water to limestone and sand on higher ground—conditions that allow aromatic varieties like Gewürztraminer to develop intensity while retaining freshness. The Pannonian climate delivers warm continental conditions: hot Hungarian air collides with cooler Alpine breezes from the west, extending the growing season while preserving natural acidity in the grapes.

Burgenland divides into four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones: Neusiedlersee surrounds the lake; Leithaberg in the north features pronounced minerality from ancient geological formations; Mittelburgenland centers on Blaufränkisch, Austria's signature red variety; Eisenberg in the southeast yields structured, iron-inflected reds.

Though Burgenland built its international reputation on red wines—Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St. Laurent—aromatic white varieties thrive here as well. The warm climate allows Gewürztraminer to achieve full phenolic ripeness, producing wines with concentrated aromatics and textural complexity. Natural and biodynamic winemaking has flourished in this region, with estates like Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, and Meinklang establishing Burgenland as a center for minimal intervention viticulture alongside its traditional strengths.
