Tasting notes

Anjou Cabernet Franc this structured is rare — the 45-year-old vines on black schist push the wine past the usual light-and-juicy Loire red into something more gripping, with a savory, mineral backbone. The 10% Sauvignon Blanc keeps it fresh rather than heavy, and the violet and pepper notes give it real aromatic precision.

Globule Rouge is made primarily from Cabernet Franc (90%) with 10% Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from 45-year-old vines planted on schist soils in and around Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, Anjou. The Cabernet Franc was fermented as whole bunches before being pressed to fiberglass cuve. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts; unfiltered; minimal added sulfites.

The schist subsoil — part of the ancient Armorican Massif, locally called Anjou Noir — lends a mineral, slightly saline quality to the wine. The 2019 vintage in Anjou produced ripe, concentrated fruit, and this wine has developed notable structure alongside its fruit, with firm but integrated tannins for a Loire red.

On the nose: raspberry, blackberry, violet, and a lift of black pepper and licorice. The palate is medium-to-full for Anjou Cabernet Franc, with the Sauvignon Blanc addition softening the tannic frame and adding freshness. The schist contributes a minerality and slight saltiness that grounds the fruit.

Pairs well with charcuterie, terrine, and pate for an aperitif spread. Sheep's milk cheeses — aged ossau-iraty or a firm tomme — echo the wine's red fruit and mineral notes. Works with roasted white meats and mushroom-based dishes.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine de la Petite Soeur

Adrien de Mello is originally from Brittany. He began working in wine in Quebec in 2003 and subsequently gained experience in South Africa (Stellenbosch), the United States (First Colony Winery, Virginia), and again in Quebec at Domaine de l'Ile Ronde, where he began making his first natural wines. Back in France in 2010, he spent several years at Domaine Duseigneur, a biodynamic estate in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In 2015, he learned of a 3.5-hectare organically farmed parcel being sold by Clos de l'Elu in Anjou and established Domaine de la Petite Soeur in Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné.

The domaine now farms approximately four hectares of vines on black and grey schist soils, with vines aged 40 to 50 years planted to Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gamay. The estate holds both organic (AB, Ecocert) and biodynamic (Demeter) certification. Adrien plows by horse and prepares herbal teas from foraged plants — nettle, comfrey, yarrow, buckthorn — for use in the vineyard in lieu of chemical treatments.

In the cellar, Adrien uses fiberglass vessels and works with whole-bunch or semi-carbonic fermentation methods for his reds, with gentle extraction as the guiding principle. Wines are fermented with native yeasts, left unfiltered, and bottled with minimal or no added sulfites. The name 'La Petite Soeur' refers to his daughter, the younger sister of his partner's first child.

Wine region

Anjou, Loire Valley, France

Anjou sits at the western end of the Loire Valley, centered on the city of Angers. The climate is oceanic, with mild winters, warm summers, and annual rainfall around 500mm, moderated by Atlantic influence from the west. The region divides broadly into two soil zones: Anjou Noir to the west, defined by ancient dark schist and volcanic rock from the Armorican Massif, and Anjou Blanc to the east, where tuffeau limestone dominates. The schist soils of Anjou Noir are generally warm, low in calcium, and well-draining, producing wines with pronounced minerality and structural grip.

Anjou produces more wine styles than any other Loire sub-region, including dry reds, dry and sweet whites, rosés, and sparkling wines across 19 AOCs. Cabernet Franc is the primary red grape, used in Anjou Rouge and Anjou-Villages AOC — the latter reserved for the most structured red wines from schist and clay-limestone parcels. Many natural wine producers in the area bottle under Vin de France to avoid AOC restrictions on grape varieties and winemaking methods. Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, where Domaine de la Petite Soeur is based, sits in the Layon valley, a southern tributary of the Loire historically renowned for sweet Chenin Blanc wines from the Coteaux du Layon AOC.
