Tasting notes

This is a zero-additive Syrah that spends years in tank before bottling, giving it a savory depth — dark cherry, black olive, garrigue, and earthy umami — that you rarely find in wines at this price. The rounded pebble soils and Mistral winds of the Camargue plateau produce grapes with genuine concentration without jammy overripeness.

Gitane is a 100% Syrah from Domaine de Rapatel, grown on the Costières plateau south of Nîmes, at the northern edge of the Camargue. The estate sits in Caissargues, roughly 10 km south of Nîmes, on soils of sandstone, rounded river pebbles (locally called grès), and limestone-clay. Vines here are exposed to the Mistral from the north and sea breezes from the Mediterranean to the south, creating a large diurnal range that concentrates flavor while preserving acidity.

Gérard Eyraud farms without synthetic inputs, using ewe's whey against powdery mildew and horsetail decoction in the vineyard. Vines are trained in Cordon de Royat or Gobelet to limit yields, which average around 20 hl/ha. Wood prunings are cut and left at the base of the vines from December to March to return organic matter to the soil. Each plot is harvested by hand, separately, at full ripeness.

In the cellar, Eyraud adds nothing: no sugar, no sulfur, no fining agents, no filtration. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. The wine ages in fiberglass or concrete tanks — never oak — for several years until Eyraud decides it is ready to bottle. As a Vin de France, Gitane carries no AOC designation; Eyraud opted out of appellation rules to maintain complete freedom in his winemaking.

The 2012 vintage was released well after harvest, consistent with Eyraud's practice of extended tank aging. By the time it reaches the glass, the wine shows the characteristic Rapatel profile: concentrated, earthy, and savory, with the garrigue and dark fruit character typical of old-vine Syrah from this sun-baked plateau.

Syrah from this region pairs naturally with the local cuisine: braised Camargue bull (gardiane de taureau), roasted lamb with herbes de Provence, or grilled merguez sausage. The wine's savory, olive-tinged character also holds up well against aged hard cheeses and dishes built around thyme and rosemary.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Rapatel (Gérard Eyraud)

Domaine de Rapatel was established in 1905 by Gérard Eyraud's grandfather on the site of a former monastic farm in Caissargues, south of Nîmes. The name Rapatel comes from the Catalan for 'hot sun,' a reference to the estate's southeast-facing position. Gérard's father, Pierre Eyraud, took over in the late 1960s and sold grapes to cooperatives. Gérard took over in 1979 at age 29, after a brief career as a Camargue bullfighter, and immediately moved the estate away from chemicals. He produced his first estate-bottled vintages under his own name in 1989, winning multiple awards at the Costières de Nîmes wine competition that same year.

The estate currently spans approximately 15 to 29 hectares (sources vary due to a 2016 fire that destroyed 7.5 hectares of vines) on heterogeneous soils of gneiss, limestone pebbles, and clay. Gérard farms without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, relying on ewe's whey, nettle manure, horsetail decoction, and sulfur and copper only when necessary. Vines are trained in Cordon de Royat or Gobelet, yielding around 20 hl/ha. Pruning wood is mulched and returned to the vine base each winter. Sheep maintain the cover crops between rows. Eyraud holds no organic certification by choice — he dislikes paperwork — but his practices are consistent with organic and natural farming.

In the cellar, Eyraud uses spontaneous native yeast fermentation and ages each plot's wine separately in fiberglass or concrete tanks — no oak barrels at Rapatel. He adds nothing to the wines: no sugar, no sulfur, no fining, no filtration. Wines are released only when Eyraud judges them ready, sometimes holding vintages for a decade or more before bottling. Daily pump-overs during fermentation help aerate the juice gradually. The result is wine that is concentrated and generous, with integrated tannins and a character shaped entirely by the fruit and the time it spends in tank.

Wine region

Camargue / Costières de Nîmes, France

The Costières de Nîmes sits on a low plateau between Nîmes and the Camargue wetlands, at the southernmost edge of the Rhône Valley wine area. The plateau reaches only about 100 metres in altitude but spans roughly 40 kilometres and overlooks the Rhône delta and the Mediterranean beyond. Soils are dominated by rounded river pebbles (galets or grès) deposited by the Rhône and Durance rivers over millennia, interspersed with red sandy clay. These free-draining, low-fertility soils force deep root growth and produce concentrated fruit. The Mistral wind, which blows consistently from the north, keeps humidity low and reduces disease pressure — a significant advantage for organic farming.

The region sits administratively within the Rhône Valley wine board (since 2004), though it borders both Languedoc and Provence. The AOC Costières de Nîmes requires Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to form at least 60% of red wines, and Syrah is today the most widely planted variety in the appellation. Sea breezes off the Camargue create a pronounced day-night temperature swing, preserving freshness and acidity despite the intense Mediterranean sun. Areas of garrigue — dry limestone scrubland with wild rosemary, lavender, and thyme — ring the vineyards and directly influence the aromatic character of wines from this appellation. Gérard Eyraud's Domaine de Rapatel bottles under Vin de France rather than the AOC, opting out of appellation bureaucracy while farming the same exceptional terroir.
