Tasting notes

The flotation method — submerging whole-cluster bunches in direct-press juice rather than fermenting on skins in the conventional sense — gives Groseille a translucent, cranberry-toned color and a texture closer to tart fruit juice than a structured red. Gamay Teinturier's red-fleshed pulp deepens the hue without adding weight or tannin, while the high natural acidity keeps the wine electric and refreshing.

Groseille is a Vin de France red from Alexis Hudon, a Quebec-born, Loire-based négociant who vinifies out of a former garage in Bourges. The 2019 blend is 40% Gamay, 40% Gamay Teinturier, and 20% Pinot Noir sourced from organically farmed parcels in the Touraine area, primarily around Saint-Aignan in Loir-et-Cher. Hudon does not own vineyards; he purchases fruit exclusively from grower-friends, participates in pruning and harvest alongside them, and brings the grapes to Bourges in small crates for vinification.

The winemaking is built around infusion rather than extraction. Three-quarters of the harvest goes to direct whole-cluster press. The remaining quarter, also in whole bunches, is submerged in the freshly pressed juice for a three-week maceration with no crushing, no pumping over, and no additions. After three weeks the full lot is pressed again. Gamay Teinturier is a red-fleshed mutation of Gamay whose pulp carries anthocyanin pigment, giving this wine its deep color despite minimal skin contact.

After pressing, the wine goes into old barrels where it rests until June, when it is lightly filtered and bottled with a small addition of sulfur dioxide. The result is a light-bodied, high-acid red with crunchy red fruit, a hint of earth, and very soft tannins. It is classified as Vin de France, as the blend and method fall outside Touraine AOC rules. The 2019 vintage was Hudon's third, and production had tripled from his debut 2018 release to approximately 1,500 cases.

Serve lightly chilled at around 55F. The high acidity and low tannin make it a natural match for charcuterie, chicken liver pate, or simple roast chicken. It also works well alongside lentil salads, grain dishes with vinaigrette, or soft, young goat cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Alex Hudon

Alexis Hudon grew up in Quebec and spent roughly a decade working as a sommelier focused on natural wines in Quebec City and Montreal. He relocated to Paris in late 2013 and completed his first harvests in 2014 alongside Julien Guillot (Clos des Vignes du Maynes, Burgundy) and Nicolas Reau in Anjou. He then worked the floor at Clamato and Coinstot Vino, two prominent natural wine restaurants in Paris, before moving to the Loire in spring 2015 to work full-time with Lise and Bertrand Jousset at their domaine in Montlouis-sur-Loire.

Hudon launched his own label in 2018 using Bertrand Jousset's cellar space in Montlouis-sur-Loire for the first two vintages. By 2019 he had established his own cellar in a former garage in Bourges and scaled production to roughly 1,500 cases. He operates as a negociant: he owns no vineyards but sources exclusively organic fruit from growers in the Touraine AOP, with the majority coming from Saint-Aignan in Loir-et-Cher. He participates actively in vineyard work, pruning and harvesting across approximately 4 hectares of sourced parcels.

In the cellar, Hudon works with no inputs beyond a minimal sulfur addition at bottling. The Groseille is made using a method associated with Burgundy vigneron Daniel Sage: three-quarters of the fruit is direct whole-cluster pressed, and the remaining quarter is submerged in that pressed juice for a three-week maceration without crushing, pumping over, or additions. The full lot is then pressed again and transferred to old barrels until June, when the wine is lightly filtered before bottling. Half of overall production is aged in barrel and half in fiberglass tank.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

The Loire Valley runs more than 1,000 kilometers from the Atlantic coast near Nantes east to Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, encompassing four main sub-regions: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, and Centre-Loire. The Touraine sub-region sits roughly 225 kilometers from both the Atlantic and the northern Massif Central, giving it a climate that falls between maritime and continental. Soils in the Touraine core include tuffeau, a chalky limestone that also served as the primary building material for the Loire's famous chateaux. Bourges, where Alexis Hudon is based, sits near the eastern edge of this zone, geographically closer to Sancerre and the Burgundy border than to Tours.

Touraine covers roughly 5,000 hectares of designated vineyards and permits red, white, rose, and sparkling wines. Gamay is one of the key red grapes in the appellation, where it ripens reliably in the region's cooler conditions and produces characteristically light-bodied, high-acid reds with pronounced red fruit. Groseille is labeled Vin de France rather than Touraine AOC because Hudon's grape sourcing and winemaking approach fall outside the AOC's regulatory framework. Gamay accounts for close to 20% of total Loire red and rose production, with a particular concentration in the Touraine and Chateaumeillant zones.
