Tasting notes

Twenty days of full carbonic maceration gives this wine a vivid red fruit core, raspberry and wild strawberry up front, with granitic mineral texture underneath that keeps it from tipping into sweetness. Eight months in used barrique adds just enough grip to make it more interesting than a typical glou-glou Beaujolais.

Gamay de Bonheur is 100% Gamay sourced from two parcels in Vaux-en-Beaujolais, just outside the Brouilly cru, with vines ranging from 40 to 80 years old planted on pink granitic sand. The wine is classified as Vin de France. Cyrille Vuillod uses full carbonic maceration for 20 days, followed by 8 months aging in used barrique. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.

The pink granitic sand soils here are low in nutrients and drain quickly, pushing vine roots deep and producing fruit with pronounced mineral character. Carbonic maceration at this length extracts vivid red fruit aromatics while keeping tannins soft, and the barrel aging adds structure without imposing wood flavor.

Cyrille farms just under 5 hectares organically and, as of the time this wine was produced, had moved into biodynamic practices as well. No certified organic or biodynamic label is used, but no synthetic treatments are applied at any point in the farming or cellar process. The result is a wine that reflects the specificity of its two parcels rather than a house style.

Serve lightly chilled at around 58-62F. Works well with charcuterie, roast chicken, or a simple pork terrine. Also a strong match for dishes with a touch of spice, as the bright acidity and low tannin hold up without competing.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Dernière Goutte

Cyrille Vuillod grew up in the Hautes-Alpes and worked for years as a ski instructor. He had been harvesting grapes in Beaujolais seasonally for around two decades before deciding to make wine full time. He spent three years apprenticing under Jean-Claude Lapalu, a respected natural wine producer in Beaujolais, and produced his first vintage in Lapalu's cellar in 2011. In 2012 he established his own cellar at the edge of Brouilly in Vaux-en-Beaujolais under the La Derniere Goutte label.

Cyrille farms just under 5 hectares of Gamay, a patchwork of parcels with old and young vines on pink granitic sand, flint, and clay. He has always farmed organically without seeking certification, and has since moved into biodynamic practices. He has forgone the use of even organically permitted sprays and no sulfur is added at any point in the winemaking process.

Vinification across the range relies on full carbonic maceration, basket press, and aging in a mix of used barrique, concrete egg, and amphora depending on the cuvee. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Cyrille also sources Chardonnay and Riesling from friends in other French regions for occasional white wine projects, but Gamay grown on his own parcels is the focus of the domaine.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

Beaujolais sits between the southern end of Burgundy and the northern outskirts of Lyon, stretching roughly 55 kilometers north to south along the west bank of the Saone River. The climate is semi-continental with some Mediterranean influence, making it warmer overall than Burgundy. The northern half of the region, where the 10 Crus and most serious producers are concentrated, is dominated by granite and schist soils that drain quickly and produce wines with more mineral character and structure than the clay and limestone soils of the south.

The region is divided into three classifications: Beaujolais AOC, Beaujolais-Villages AOC covering 39 communes, and the 10 named Crus including Brouilly, Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-a-Vent. Brouilly is the largest and southernmost Cru, with soils of pink granite, red clay, limestone marl, and some blue schist at altitude, running from 200 to 500 meters above sea level. Vaux-en-Beaujolais, where Cyrille Vuillod farms, sits on the edge of Brouilly territory on pink granitic sand, flint, and clay. All red wines in the region are made from Gamay Noir a Jus Blanc, a grape pushed out of Burgundy proper by ducal decree in the 14th century that found its ideal home in Beaujolais granite.
