Tasting notes

Full carbonic maceration on McLaren Vale Grenache produces a wine that is pale, aromatic, and loaded with fresh raspberry and cherry, while the 10% of fruit grown on dry-grown ironstone vines provides a structural mineral thread that keeps it honest. Tannins are almost imperceptible and the bright cranberry acidity makes it one of the most refreshing reds to come out of South Australia.

Danby is named after James Erskine's son and returns for the 2018 vintage as a fully carbonic Grenache. The grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards across McLaren Vale sub-zones including Blewitt Springs and Clarendon, with around 10% of the fruit coming from dry-grown vines planted on ironstone soils. Those unirrigated, rocky sites give the wine a subtle mineral backbone beneath its exuberant aromatics.

Whole bunches go through full carbonic maceration for approximately three weeks, then the wine is pressed to tank. No sulfur, no fining agents, no filtration. Wild yeast ferments the must with zero additions at any stage. The wine is sealed under crown cap.

The result is pale, bright, and highly aromatic: raspberry, cherry, and baking spice up front, with cranberry-like acidity carrying through a light, low-tannin palate. It drinks more like a serious Beaujolais cru than anything typically associated with McLaren Vale Grenache. The ironstone-grown portion keeps the wine from floating away into pure fruit confection.

Serve slightly chilled. Best enjoyed young while the carbonic lift and fruit brightness are at their peak.

Serve lightly chilled alongside charcuterie, grilled lamb kofta, or a simple roast chicken. Its low tannin and bright acidity also make it a natural match for dishes with a little heat, such as merguez sausages or a Sichuan-spiced eggplant. Works just as well as a standalone glass without food.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jauma

James Erskine launched Jauma with the 2010 vintage, sourcing McLaren Vale Grenache fruit after leaving a decorated career as a sommelier. Before founding the label, he was named Australian Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year in 2008, received the Len Evans scholarship, and co-founded the Natural Selection Theory collective alongside Tom Shobbrook and Anton von Klopper, a group instrumental in establishing Australia's natural wine movement.

Jauma's McLaren Vale vineyards are farmed organically under the supervision of viticulturalist Fiona Wood, who has worked with Erskine since 2011. The sites span Blewitt Springs, Clarendon, Seaview, and McLaren Vale proper, planted on soils ranging from sandy loam over clay to ironstone-laced rocky ground. Yields are kept low through dry farming. In 2018, Erskine also purchased a certified-organic cherry farm in Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, which now serves as the Jauma winery and cellar door base.

Since 2015, Erskine has used no sulfur at any stage. Winemaking across the range involves native yeast fermentation, no additions of any kind, no fining, and no filtration. Vessels vary across wines and include tank, amphora, and wood. All wines are closed under crown cap. The Danby Grenache is made by full carbonic maceration for approximately three weeks, then pressed to tank for aging.

Wine region

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale sits on the Fleurieu Peninsula approximately 45 minutes south of Adelaide, between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Gulf of St Vincent. The region covers around 7,400 hectares under vine and operates under a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers with cooling afternoon sea breezes that moderate temperatures during ripening. The soils rank among the most ancient in the world, estimated at over 500 million years old in some areas, and range from deep Maslin sands and sandy loam over clay in Blewitt Springs to ironstone-rich loam and red-brown clay in Clarendon and the elevated hill zones.

Blewitt Springs is one of the cooler sub-zones, elevated and with sandstone subsoils under deep sand topsoil, producing perfumed, red-fruited Grenache with a spicy character. Clarendon sits higher still, at up to 350 metres elevation, with a more continental temperature swing between day and night and rocky, loam-over-clay soils. McLaren Vale has no officially gazetted sub-regional appellations, but these informal zones are widely used on labels to signal distinct terroir. Grenache, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon are the dominant red varieties, with Grenache seeing a major quality revival over the past decade as producers prioritize old dry-grown bush vines and lighter extraction techniques.
