Tasting notes

This is a genuinely odd and delicious blend — the direct-pressed Grenache keeps things translucent and fresh while the skin-macerated Pinot Noir and Valdiguié bring structure, cranberry-raspberry fruit, and a floral lift. The backstory is baked into the wine: frost-damaged Russian River Pinot Noir, smoke-season Grenache, and a grape variety most Californians have never heard of.

Damaged Goods is a non-vintage red blend from Artemis Botanical, a small northern California producer working exclusively with organically grown fruit and adding nothing in the cellar — including sulfur. The wine combines two separate harvests: 2019 Pinot Noir and Valdiguié, both macerated on the skins, blended with 2020 Grenache that was direct pressed. The Grenache was pressed early specifically to avoid smoke taint during the severe air quality events of the 2020 California wildfire season.

The 2019 Pinot Noir component came from a Russian River Valley vineyard that sustained frost damage, which cut yields significantly but opened a brief window for Artemis to work with otherwise expensive, tightly allocated fruit. The Valdiguié — historically mislabeled as Napa Gamay across California until DNA analysis clarified its identity in 1980 — adds a high-toned red fruit character and bright acidity to the blend. Both were fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and received skin contact.

Artemis Botanical operates as a one-person project with roots in fortified and aromatized wines — vermouth, amaro, grappa, and piquette all sit alongside the table wines in the lineup. The name of this wine is a nod to the Gang of Four track of the same name, not a comment on wine quality. All fermentations are spontaneous, and zero additives are used at any stage.

The light body and bright acidity make this flexible at the table. Try it with charcuterie, roast chicken, or a simple tomato and burrata salad. It is also well-suited to slight chilling, which sharpens the red fruit and keeps the blend lively.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Artemis Botanical

Artemis Botanical is a one-person northern California project that began with the goal of making fortified and aromatized wines — vermouth, amaro, and grappa — under the standards of the natural wine movement, a category the producer felt was being overlooked in discussions of transparency and ecological farming. The project has since expanded into table wines, piquette, and fruit eau de vie alongside the aromatized wines.

All fruit sourced by Artemis Botanical is organically grown. The producer works with grapes from multiple northern California regions and sources, with vineyard access often opportunistic — frost damage, smoke events, or other factors sometimes open short windows to fruit that would otherwise be unavailable. Fermentations are spontaneous using native yeasts, and no additives of any kind are used, including sulfur. The producer describes the approach as zero-zero.

Wine region

California, USA

Artemis Botanical sources fruit from across northern California, a broad sweep that includes appellations as distinct as the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County and warmer inland areas. The Russian River Valley AVA, established in 1983, sits in Sonoma County and is defined by its cool, fog-influenced climate driven by Pacific maritime air moving through the Petaluma Gap. Evening fog tempers summer heat and extends the growing season, making it one of the cooler AVAs in the state. Goldridge series sandy loam soils dominate the best vineyard sites and drain well, concentrating vine stress and flavor development.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay together account for the majority of plantings in the Russian River Valley, and the appellation built its reputation on Pinot Noir specifically — red-fruited, high-acid, and structurally more restrained than warmer California expressions. Valdiguié, historically planted across Napa and other northern California counties under the name Napa Gamay, is now a rare variety held by a handful of producers statewide. It produces light, high-acid wines with red berry and floral character, typically low in tannin. Grenache in northern California performs differently depending on site, but when direct pressed it yields a pale, delicate wine that reads closer to a rosé component than a full red.
