Tasting notes

The 2018 Cinque leads with tart red cherry, orange peel, and dried herb on the nose, with silky tannins and a refreshing cut of acidity that keeps every sip moving. It is an unusually complete expression of Castelnuovo Berardenga Sangiovese at an everyday-drinking weight, built from obscure indigenous varieties most producers have forgotten.

Cinque is the second wine of Podere le Boncie, grown around the hamlet of San Felice in Castelnuovo Berardenga, at the southern edge of the Chianti Classico zone. The fruit comes from a 1.3-hectare parcel just outside the Chianti Classico boundary, planted on very rocky limestone soils with a south-southwest facing aspect, supplemented by select vats from the estate's main Chianti Classico holdings. Because the Chiesa Monti vineyard was never registered as a Chianti Classico site, the wine is classified as Toscana IGT.

The blend draws on the five indigenous Tuscan varieties planted at Le Boncie: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Mammolo, and Fogliatonda. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, after which the wine is transferred to wood vats ranging from 5 to 30 hectoliters for one year of aging. It is then assembled in tank, allowed to rest, and bottled without fining or filtration.

The name Cinque (five) references multiple coincidences: the five grape varieties, the five leaves and flowers on a grapevine cluster, and the estate's house number. Giovanna Morganti farms all her vineyards according to biodynamic principles, with hand harvesting and spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The 2018 growing season was rainy and relatively cool for Tuscany, producing a wine that is notably lighter in frame and higher in freshness than warmer years.

Works well with tomato-based pasta dishes, pork roast, or braised rabbit with olives. The wine's bright acidity and medium frame also hold up to aged pecorino or a simple board of Tuscan salumi. Serve at 60-64F; a short 20-minute decant opens the nose.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Podere le Boncie

Podere le Boncie is located in the hamlet of San Felice, a few kilometers north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern tier of the Chianti Classico zone. Giovanna Morganti trained as an oenologist and in the mid-1980s worked for Agricola San Felice on a project cataloguing and planting roughly 300 traditional Tuscan grape varieties collected from old vineyards across the region. Her father, an oenologist himself, recognized the quality potential of indigenous Sangiovese long before international consultants arrived in Tuscany.

When her father gave her a small farm with olive groves called Le Boncie, Giovanna planted a vineyard using her favorites from the San Felice experimental project: Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Foglia Tonda, Mammolo, and Prugnolo. The estate's home vineyard, now 3.5 hectares, is planted at a very high density of 7,000 vines per hectare and trained as bush vines (alberello). Vineyard work follows biodynamic principles; all harvesting is done by hand.

In the cellar, fermentation occurs in open-topped wooden tanks using indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. Le Boncie produces three wines: Le Trame (the flagship from the Chianti Classico estate vineyard), Cinque (a blend from the home vineyard and a 1.3-hectare parcel on rocky limestone soils just outside the DOCG boundary), and Chiesamonti (a single-parcel wine bottled separately starting with the 2018 vintage). All wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy

Chianti Classico occupies the historic hill country between Florence and Siena in central Tuscany, covering approximately 71,800 hectares in total with around 7,000 hectares registered for DOCG wine production. Vineyard elevations across the zone range from roughly 300 to 600 meters above sea level. The climate is broadly continental: cold winters, hot and dry summers, and meaningful diurnal temperature swings that preserve Sangiovese's acidity and aromatic complexity.

Castelnuovo Berardenga sits at the most southeasterly corner of the Chianti Classico zone, bordering the Sienese plains. Soils in this subzone include sandy and alberese (calcareous clay) types, with pockets of tuff rock and rocky limestone on higher, windier slopes. The warmth of this southern exposure produces wines with structure and depth, while the rockier parcels just outside the official DOCG boundary — like the one supplying fruit for Cinque — contribute mineral lift and freshness. Sangiovese is the dominant variety across the zone, blended historically with Canaiolo, Colorino, Mammolo, and Fogliatonda.
