Tasting notes

Unblended Ciliegiolo this focused is rare anywhere in Italy, and Camillo is the producer most closely identified with the variety in Maremma. The 2021 delivers bright red cherry, fresh herbs, and a crunchy, savory finish with silky tannins that make it one of the most effortlessly drinkable reds from Tuscany.

Antonio Camillo's Ciliegiolo is a 100% Ciliegiolo from old vines in the Maremma, the coastal-influenced hinterland of southern Tuscany. The wine is labeled Toscana IGT, as no DOC or DOCG currently permits a 100% Ciliegiolo bottling. Vines are sourced from plots in the communes of Manciano and Capalbio, aged between 40 and 60 years, farmed organically using only copper and sulfur.

In the cellar, Camillo works with minimal intervention. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and aging takes place primarily in concrete vats, which Camillo favors for preserving the natural character of the grape without the influence of oak. The result is a wine that reads as transparent and place-driven rather than winemaker-shaped.

Ciliegiolo translates literally to "little cherry," and the variety delivers exactly that: a wine built around red cherry fruit, fresh herbs, and lively acidity with silky, low tannins. It ripens 7 to 10 days ahead of Sangiovese, giving it a brightness and crunch that sets it apart from most Tuscan reds. Single-varietal bottlings of Ciliegiolo remain uncommon; Camillo is one of the few producers making it the centerpiece of his entire production.

At 13% ABV, this is a medium-light red that suits the table as much as it suits the glass on its own. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62F, to keep its freshness front and center.

Works well with simply prepared foods that do not overwhelm its delicate structure: grilled chicken thighs, white bean and rosemary bruschetta, or a plate of Tuscan cured meats. Also a natural match for pasta al pomodoro or a fresh tomato and herb salad. Serve slightly cool to keep the fruit lively.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Antonio Camillo

Antonio Camillo worked for approximately fifteen years as a cellar master at major estates in Maremma, including eight years at Poggio Argentiera alongside owner Giampaolo Paglia. In 2006, after years of searching for old-vine plots suited to Ciliegiolo, he started his own label, dedicating production exclusively to indigenous Tuscan varieties. He is widely regarded as the reference producer for single-varietal Ciliegiolo in Maremma.

Camillo works primarily with rented vineyards aged between 40 and 60 years in the communes of Manciano and Capalbio in southern Maremma. His total holdings have grown to approximately 12 hectares across multiple plots, planted to Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Grenache, Vermentino, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Ansonica, and Procanico. Farming is organic throughout, with only copper and sulfur used for vine health. Mechanical intervention is minimized and green pruning is done carefully to avoid stressing the plant.

In the cellar, Camillo uses concrete vats as his primary vessel, preferring the material for its ability to let the wine breathe without imparting flavor the way steel or oak would. Large wooden casks are reserved for his more structured wines. Fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts. The overall approach is one of minimal intervention: accompanying the wine through its natural evolution rather than directing it.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy

Maremma is the broad coastal and inland territory of southern Tuscany, centered on the province of Grosseto and stretching from the Tyrrhenian Sea inland toward Monte Amiata. The region was historically a malarial marshland, drained progressively since Etruscan times and more completely in the 20th century. Today it produces wines under the Maremma Toscana DOC (granted in 2011, after 16 years as an IGT designation) as well as the broader Toscana IGT classification. The climate is Mediterranean, with over 2,400 sunshine hours per year, hot dry summers moderated by sea breezes off the Tyrrhenian coast, and mild winters with rainfall concentrated in autumn.

Soils across Maremma are heterogeneous: clay, sand, limestone, and volcanic elements appear in different combinations depending on proximity to the coast or the inland hills. In the interior zones near Manciano and Capalbio, where Antonio Camillo sources his Ciliegiolo, the terrain is hillier and the climate slightly cooler than on the coastal plain, giving wines more freshness and structure. Key appellations in the broader area include Morellino di Scansano DOCG (Sangiovese-based) and Maremma Toscana DOC, which covers a wide range of red and white styles. Ciliegiolo, long used as a blending grape in the region, is increasingly bottled on its own as a Toscana IGT.
