Tasting notes

This is one of the few red pet nats that stays genuinely bone dry — no residual sweetness, just bright strawberry fruit, fine bubbles, and a clean tannic snap on the finish. Tortul's zero-intervention approach (no sulfites, no filtration) gives it an unpredictable liveliness that makes each bottle feel alive.

Chuck is a pétillant naturel from Anthony Tortul of La Sorga, made from 100% Gamay sourced from organically farmed vines in the Languedoc. The wine is labeled as Vin de France, giving Tortul the freedom to work with Gamay, a grape not native to the south of France. Bubbles are created naturally in the bottle using the ancestral method: the wine is bottled before fermentation completes, trapping CO2 without any dosage or added sulfites.

Tortul works as a négociant-vigneron, sourcing grapes exclusively from organic or biodynamic parcels across the Languedoc and beyond, with soils ranging from clay-limestone and schist to basalt and sand depending on the parcel. All vinifications at La Sorga use only spontaneous (wild yeast) fermentation with no fining, no filtration, and zero sulfite additions. The Chuck label is a nod to Chuck Norris, in keeping with Tortul's irreverent approach to labeling.

In the glass, this is a light-bodied, bone-dry sparkling red with fine bubbles, flavors of fresh strawberry and tart red fruit, and a slightly tannic, mineral finish. It drinks like a cold, lively Gamay with a gentle fizz — no sweetness, no heaviness. Serve well-chilled and drink soon after opening.

Serve well-chilled alongside charcuterie, jambon de pays, or a simple cheese board. The light tannin and fizz cut through fatty pork dishes. It also works well with strawberry-forward desserts or fresh fruit plates.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Sorga

Anthony Tortul founded La Sorga in 2008 in the village of Vias in Languedoc-Roussillon, initially operating as a pure négociant. Born in Foix, Ariège, in the Pyrénées foothills, he had previously spent six seasons working as a viticultural technician and oenologist in vineyards across the south of France, including stints in Bergerac, Fitou, Corbières, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. From 2013 he began farming his own vineyards in Languedoc, while continuing to source from trusted growers throughout the region.

Tortul selects grapes exclusively from organically or biodynamically farmed parcels, prioritizing old vines with yields typically between 15 and 23 hl/ha. He works with nine vineyard sites spread across the Aude and Hérault departments, covering around 25 hectares in total, planted to more than 20 grape varieties on soils that include calcareous clay, schist, basalt, sand, and granite. All grapes are harvested by hand into 15kg boxes.

In the winery, Tortul uses only spontaneous fermentation, works with whole bunches, and does not control fermentation temperatures. Wines are aged in cement tanks or old wooden barrels, and every wine leaves the cellar without fining, filtration, or added sulfites — a strict zero-zero approach. La Sorga produces between 20 and 34 cuvées per vintage, each vinified separately before any blending decisions are made.

Wine region

Languedoc, France

Languedoc is part of the larger Occitanie administrative region in southern France, stretching from the Spanish border in the west along the Mediterranean coast toward Provence in the east. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean: hot, dry summers with low rainfall, mild springs and autumns, and the persistent Tramontane wind from the northwest that dries vines and reduces disease pressure. Soils are exceptionally varied, ranging from chalk, limestone, and gravel inland to schist, basalt, sand, and granitic soils in the mountain foothills, giving individual parcels distinct characters even within close proximity.

Languedoc holds 23 AOC/AOP designations covering roughly 16% of its total production, with the regional AOP Languedoc forming the base of the classification system. Key appellations include Corbières, Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, and Pic Saint-Loup for reds, and Picpoul de Pinet for whites. Many ambitious producers, including Anthony Tortul, opt for the Vin de France classification rather than AOC or IGP designations, which gives them freedom to use grape varieties and blending practices outside appellation rules. Languedoc holds approximately 33% of France's certified organic vineyards.
