Tasting notes

The Rademacher Vineyard leaves a clear fingerprint here: eucalyptus and pennyroyal cut through the ripe black fruit, giving the wine a savory edge that most California Cabs lack. Fourteen months in neutral barrel keeps the oak entirely in the background, letting the site speak without interference.

Dan Marioni's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced entirely from the Rademacher Vineyard on Carriger Road in Sonoma Valley, where approximately 20-year-old vines grow in well-drained alluvial soils at the base of the Sonoma Mountains. The grapes were farmed organically and harvested by hand.

In the cellar, Marioni kept it straightforward: fully destemmed, manual punchdowns throughout fermentation with native yeast, no additions, no fining, no filtration, and no added SO2. The wine aged for 14 months in neutral barrels before bottling. This is the same no-addition, nothing-removed approach that defines all Marioni wines.

The winemaker notes that 2018 brought ripe, forward fruit with more immediate accessibility than previous vintages from the same site. Underneath that approachable fruit, Rademacher's signature character comes through: eucalyptus, pennyroyal, and the herbal edge that distinguishes this vineyard from others in the valley. The wine can be opened now or cellared.

Works well with grilled lamb chops, a bone-in ribeye, or braised short ribs. The eucalyptus note in the wine bridges naturally to herb-crusted preparations. Also holds up to aged hard cheeses like a two-year Fiscalini cheddar.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Dan Marioni

Dan Marioni is a fifth-generation Sonoma native who graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked at Tesla before shifting to winemaking. In 2016, he began working harvests at Coturri Winery in Glen Ellen alongside Nic Coturri, learning a philosophy of zero additions, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites. When Sonoma Mtn Winery closed in 2019, Marioni launched his own label.

Marioni sources from organically farmed vineyards across Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain. All farming practices are organic, and the stated goal is regenerative viticulture that builds soil health rather than relying on chemical inputs. The Rademacher Vineyard on Carriger Road has been Marioni's longest-running source, present in his lineup since he began making wine.

The winemaking approach is consistent across all Marioni wines: spontaneous fermentation with native yeast, destemmed fruit, manual punchdowns, aging in neutral barrels, and nothing added or removed before bottling. Fining agents and filtration are not used. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon spent 14 months in neutral barrel before release.

Wine region

Sonoma Valley, USA

Sonoma Valley AVA occupies the southeastern corner of Sonoma County, running north to south between the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west. The 72,402-acre appellation has approximately 13,000 acres under vine and contains over fifteen distinct soil series, ranging from alluvial valley floor deposits to volcanic and sedimentary benchland soils. Cool air enters from San Pablo Bay to the south, moderating what would otherwise be a warm inland valley climate and producing meaningful diurnal temperature swings during the growing season.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot are the dominant varieties in Sonoma Valley. Within the broader AVA, nested sub-appellations including Sonoma Mountain and Moon Mountain District offer distinct terroir expressions: Sonoma Mountain rises to 2,400 feet with well-drained soils suited to structured Cabernet, while Moon Mountain's fractured basalt and volcanic ash soils at 400 to 2,700 feet elevation produce concentrated, mineral-edged reds. Valley-floor and benchland sites along Carriger Road and similar corridors offer alluvial soils with good drainage, historically recognized for their Cabernet Sauvignon potential.
