Tasting notes

Eight days of skin contact on a blend of four local varieties gives this wine a pale amber color with dried apricot and quince on the nose and a clean bitter almond finish that is characteristic of Pignoletto. At 11% ABV it stays light on its feet while the clay and limestone soils of Valsamoggia add a quiet mineral thread throughout.

Buriana is a skin-contact white wine made by Jacopo Stigliano and bottled at Azienda Agricola Gradizzolo in Monteveglio, a village in the Valsamoggia hills between Bologna and Modena. The blend draws on Pignoletto, Trebbiano, Sauvignon, and Verdicchio sourced from old vines ranging from 60 to over 90 years of age, grown at 200 to 300 metres above sea level on clay and limestone soils.

The grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and macerate on their skins for 8 days, giving the wine its amber color and light tannic grip. Fermentation and aging take place in cement vats and amphora. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulfur.

The name Buriana comes from "Burian," a cold Siberian wind known for bringing storms. The vineyards are farmed without pesticides, herbicides, or systemic treatments, with all work done by hand. This is a field-blend-style wine rooted in the traditional mixed-variety viticulture of the Colli Bolognesi.

The light tannins and bright acidity make this a versatile table wine. Serve with cured meats, soft-rind cheeses, fried seafood, or pasta dishes with cream or vegetable-based sauces. Its bitter almond finish also works well alongside dishes seasoned with herbs or aged hard cheeses.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gradizzolo

Azienda Agricola Gradizzolo is a small family-run estate located at Via Invernata 2 in Monteveglio, within the Valsamoggia municipality in the province of Bologna. The Ognibene family has farmed the steep hillside vineyards of Monteveglio for four generations, working entirely by hand and using only sulfur and copper treatments in the vineyard. Antonio Ognibene has guided the estate through more than 40 harvests and the property holds approximately 7 hectares under vine, including an 81-year-old Pignoletto planting used for the estate's Bersot 1933 bottling.

Jacopo Stigliano is the winemaker behind the Buriana label, which is produced at Gradizzolo. Originally from Bologna, Stigliano studied Food History and Culture before spending years working with natural wine producers across Italy and internationally, including time with Stefano Amerighi. He began his own project in 2015 by recovering abandoned old vineyards in Valsamoggia, a narrow valley between Bologna and Modena. The parcels he farms sit between 200 and 300 metres above sea level on clay and limestone soils, and include at least twelve white and eight red grape varieties growing in the traditional alberata system, where vines are trained up living trees.

All vineyard work is manual, with no pesticides, herbicides, or systemic treatments. The vineyards have never exceeded three hectares under Stigliano's management. In the cellar, grapes are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and macerated on the skins for 8 days. Fermentation takes place in cement vats and amphora. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur additions.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across northern Italy from the Apennines to the Adriatic, divided into two historically distinct halves: Emilia to the west and Romagna to the east. The area around Bologna sits at the foot of the Apennine hills, where the Colli Bolognesi DOC covers red and white varietal wines from the hilly terrain south and west of the city. Vineyards here sit between 200 and 300 metres above sea level, with soils that mix clay, limestone, marl, and rock fragments. The climate is influenced by both continental cold from the north and warmer air from the Po Valley, with meaningful diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity in the grapes.

Pignoletto is the signature white variety of the Bologna hills and is genetically identical to Grechetto Gentile (Grechetto di Todi). It gained its own DOCG designation, Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto DOCG, in 2010, covering 182 hectares across the provinces of Bologna and Modena. The grape produces dry, light-bodied wines with citrus, white flower, almond, and pear aromas and a characteristic bitter finish. Trebbiano, Verdicchio, and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown in the zone. Emilia-Romagna is also the source of Lambrusco, Sangiovese-based Romagna reds, and Albana di Romagna DOCG, the region's first white DOCG.
