Tasting notes

This is not the pale, neutral rosé that Provence is famous for — it has actual color, grip, and a wild-strawberry-and-citrus edge backed by the mineral tension of blue marl and limestone soils. At 11% ABV with zero dosage and zero sulfites added, it drinks more like a savory sparkling red fruit than anything you'd find at a poolside.

Henri Milan's Brut Nature Rosé is a zero-dosage sparkling wine from the foothills of the Alpilles mountains near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It is declassified as Vin de France — a deliberate choice Milan made in 2007 when he withdrew from the Baux-de-Provence AOP to gain freedom over grape varieties and winemaking decisions. The 2017 blend draws on Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on blue marl over limestone, the same geological mosaic that soil microbiologist Claude Bourguignon mapped on the estate in the mid-1990s.

In the cellar, grapes are hand-harvested and undergo whole-bunch maceration for five days in cement tank before pressing. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts and no temperature control. The wine is bottled without added sulfites, with no fining and no filtration — expect natural sediment and a more saturated color than a typical Provençal rosé. At 11% ABV, it is one of the lightest expressions in the Milan lineup.

The domaine farms organically and applies biodynamic practices, including horse-drawn plowing in select parcels. Vineyards are dry-farmed and permanently covered with vegetation. Between 60,000 and 70,000 bottles are produced annually across all cuvées, with the Brut Nature representing a small allocation each vintage.

This wine carries the label notation "Sans Soufre Ajouté" — no sulfites added — consistent with the zero-sulfur cuvées Milan has produced since 2000. Serve cold and be prepared for living wine character: slight effervescence, possible cloudiness, and red-fruit-driven energy that rewards drinking sooner rather than later.

A good match for grilled sardines, bouillabaisse, or charcuterie boards with olives and cured meats. The dry, fruit-forward character also works alongside fresh goat cheese or a salade niçoise. Serve well chilled at 45–48°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Henri Milan

Domaine Milan was established in 1956 by Robert Milan on a property approximately two kilometers from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the foothills of the Alpilles. Robert initially sold grapes and bulk wine to the local cooperative. Henri Milan, Robert's son, took over the estate in 1986 after abandoning law studies, and immediately pivoted toward estate bottling and quality-focused viticulture. The domaine today spans roughly 15 to 20 hectares across a geological mosaic of blue marl over limestone, Quaternary gravel, and yellow sandstone — soil types that bear similarities to parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and, in the case of the blue marl, to Pomerol.

Henri began converting to organic farming in 1988. A pivotal moment came in 1996 when soil microbiologist Claude Bourguignon conducted an analysis of the estate's parcels, confirming the mineral complexity of sites like La Tuilière Vieille and Clos Milan. That same year, a meeting with natural winemaker Claude Courtois of Domaine Les Cailloux du Paradis pushed Henri toward biodynamic principles. The domaine achieved its first sulfite-free cuvée in 2000. Vineyards are dry-farmed, permanently covered with vegetation, minimally tilled, and worked by horse in select parcels. Henri's daughter Emmanuelle serves as in-house oenologist; his son Théophile manages the commercial side and now leads production with his wife Natalie.

In the cellar, all fermentations use native yeasts with no temperature control. Wines are vinified parcel by parcel and aged in concrete tanks, old oak barrels, or large foudres depending on the cuvée. No fining or filtration is applied. The Brut Nature cuvées carry the label notation 'Sans Soufre Ajouté' — no added sulfites. In 2007, Henri formally withdrew from the Baux-de-Provence AOP and declassified the entire range to Vin de France, freeing the estate from appellation restrictions on variety composition and winemaking practices.

Wine region

Provence, France

Provence is France's oldest wine-producing region, stretching roughly 200 kilometers between the Mediterranean coast and the lower Alps across the Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, and Alpes-Maritimes departments. The region has nine AOC designations — Côtes de Provence being the largest, followed by Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux-de-Provence, Bandol, Cassis, Bellet, Palette, Coteaux Varois en Provence, and Pierrevert. The climate is hot Mediterranean: long, dry summers, mild winters, and the persistent Mistral wind, which reduces humidity and disease pressure across the vineyards. Soils vary considerably — limestone and clay inland, schist and quartz closer to the coast, with isolated pockets of blue marl, sandstone, and ancient gravel.

Les Baux-de-Provence AOC, located in the heart of the Alpilles mountain range and officially recognized in 1995, covers approximately 300 hectares across seven communes including Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Maussane-les-Alpilles, and Les Baux-de-Provence itself. The appellation is notable for requiring all vineyards to be farmed organically, making it the first AOC in France to mandate this across the entire production area. Soils are primarily limestone scree and clay-limestone with blue marl subsoils. The principal red varieties are Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre; Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon are permitted as minor blending components. Domaine Milan withdrew from this AOC in 2007, declassifying all wines to Vin de France to avoid restrictions on grape varieties and winemaking — a decision shared by nearby Domaine de Trévallon.
