Tasting notes

Romain Zordan sources Chardonnay specifically from clay-limestone parcels because he knows granite — the bedrock of his Fleurie estate — simply does not suit it. That deliberate sourcing decision shows up in the glass: there's a creamy, slightly weighty texture, with ripe pear, almond, and lemon meringue character that reads more like southern Burgundy than a throwaway white from Gamay country.

Château de Grand Pré's Bourgogne Blanc is 100% Chardonnay sourced from clay and limestone soils in the Beaujolais region. Winemaker Romain Zordan deliberately sources Chardonnay from these limestone parcels rather than the estate's own granite-dominated Fleurie vineyards, which he considers better suited to Gamay. The grapes are hand-harvested with sorting both in the vineyard and cellar.

Vinification follows a non-interventionist approach: fermentation with native yeasts only, no added yeasts, no fining, and no filtering. The wine is labeled as Bourgogne Blanc — an appellation legally accessible to Chardonnay grown in the Beaujolais zone — rather than Beaujolais Blanc.

The result sits on the richer, rounder end of the spectrum for unoaked natural Chardonnay: a slightly creamy texture with notes of ripe pear, almond, lemon meringue, and stone fruit, balanced by fresh acidity. Minimal sulfur is used only when the vintage demands it, keeping the wine as clean and unmanipulated as possible.

The estate has been certified organic through Ecocert since 2012. Romain Zordan, grandson of founders Louis and Renée Bertrand, also has a working relationship with Jean-François Ganevat of the Jura, who purchases Romain's grapes for select cuvées — a signal of the fruit quality coming out of this small 8-hectare domaine.

A good match for roast chicken with pan jus, steamed mussels, or a soft-rind cheese like Brie de Meaux. The wine's slight creaminess and fresh acidity also hold up well against butter-poached fish or a simple leek gratin.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Château de Grand Pré

Château de Grand Pré is an 18th-century estate located between the communes of Fleurie and Villié-Morgon in the northern Beaujolais Cru zone. Louis and Renée Bertrand purchased the domaine in 1972, when the vines were old and the cellars were in disrepair. They replanted and rebuilt. Their children — Guy with his wife Annick, and Christine with her husband Claude Zordan — took over operations in the 1990s and began steering the estate toward low-intervention farming. By 2000, all synthetic chemicals had been eliminated from the vineyards.

The estate spans 8 hectares in total: 6 hectares in Fleurie, 1.5 hectares in Morgon, and 0.5 hectares in Beaujolais Villages. Annual production ranges between 30,000 and 40,000 bottles. Romain Zordan, grandson of the founders, now leads winemaking. The estate achieved Ecocert organic certification in 2012. That same year, Romain worked harvest alongside Jean-François Ganevat in the Jura; Ganevat continues to purchase Romain's grapes for select cuvées.

Farming across the estate is done by hand: vines are pruned from December through March, no herbicides are used, and tillage is performed throughout the year to encourage deep root growth. Yields are kept low, between 25 and 35 hectoliters per hectare depending on the vintage. Harvest is manual with multiple sorting passes in the vineyard and in the cellar. Fermentation uses only indigenous yeasts with no additions. All wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined, with minimal sulfur used only when the vintage requires it.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

Beaujolais sits at the southern end of the greater Burgundy wine zone, approximately 55 kilometers long and 14 kilometers wide, with around 18,000 hectares under vine. The climate is semi-continental, moderated by oceanic influences from the west and warming Mediterranean air from the south. Terroir shifts dramatically north to south: the northern Cru villages — Fleurie, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent and seven others — sit on granite and schist-dominant soils that suit Gamay. The southern plains carry richer clay and limestone soils.

White wine production in Beaujolais is a small fraction of total output, under 3% of the region's volume. Beaujolais Blanc and Bourgogne Blanc whites must be made from 100% Chardonnay. The best Chardonnay parcels sit in the northern and southern zones where limestone and clay predominate — geologically similar to the Mâconnais immediately to the north, and overlapping with it in places. Appellation laws restrict any single vineyard to no more than 15% white grape plantings, which naturally caps white wine production. The ten Cru appellations — Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié, and Saint-Amour — produce only red wine.
