Tasting notes

Each wine in the set shows a different face of Vinho Verde's native varieties: Deu Bode is translucent ruby with smoky mineral grip, red berries, and iron-like freshness; Tez delivers lemon zest, stone fruit, and firm tannin from a five-month skin maceration; Luar Rosa is floral and bright with blue-red berry fruit and a saline finish. The unifying thread is the chestnut flower technique, which keeps all three wines taut and alive without relying on sulfur.

The Trio brings together three 2020 wines from Bojo do Luar: Deu Bode (red), Tez (orange), and Luar Rosa (rosé). All three are made from indigenous northern Portuguese varieties grown on deep granitic soils near the Tâmega River, in the foothills of the Serra do Marão mountain range. The vineyards have south-southwestern exposure and are farmed organically and biodynamically, with Demeter certification. Soils are fertilized with self-made compost blended with chicken and cow manure.

Deu Bode is a 70/30 blend of red and white varieties — Vinhão, Borraçal, Bastardo, Espadeiro, Arinto, and Loureiro — hand-harvested in early October. The red varieties undergo a five-day maceration before spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. Tez is made from equal parts Avesso and Azal: the Avesso macerates for five months with 10% whole clusters while the Azal is directly pressed, both fermented without temperature control. Luar Rosa blends 80% Azal with 20% Espadeiro, with a twelve-day skin maceration followed by fermentation and three months of aging in 100-year-old clay talhas (amphorae).

Across all three wines, ground chestnut flowers — approximately 1 kg per 1,100-liter amphora — are added at the start of fermentation. Fernando Paiva, the first Portuguese producer to hold Demeter certification, introduced this technique as a natural stabilizer in place of sulfur. All wines are unfiltered. Minimal sulfur is used at bottling on some wines in the range, at levels between 10 and 30 mg/L.

The region around the Tâmega benefits from a cool spring followed by warm days and cool nights through the September–October harvest. This temperature variation, combined with the naturally high tartaric acid levels of the chosen varieties, gives these wines their defining freshness and mineral edge without any acidification in the cellar.

Deu Bode works well with grilled sardines, roasted chicken, or charcuterie — serve it slightly chilled. Tez pairs naturally with aged sheep's cheese, grilled octopus with olive oil and paprika, or fried bacalhau fritters. Luar Rosa is a good match for salt cod dishes, raw oysters, or light vegetable-based starters.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Bojo do Luar

Bojo do Luar is a collaborative natural wine project in Portugal's Vinho Verde region, initiated by importer Savio Soares in partnership with biodynamic viticulturist Antonio Sousa. The project grew out of Soares's encounter with Fernando Paiva, the first Portuguese producer to obtain Demeter biodynamic certification, who introduced Soares to Sousa and to the technique of adding ground chestnut flowers during fermentation as a sulfur substitute.

The vineyards sit near the Tâmega River in the foothills of the Serra do Marão, on deep granitic soils with south-southwestern exposure. Farming is organic and biodynamic; soils are fertilized with self-made compost blended with chicken and cow manure. Grapes — selected specifically for their naturally high levels of tartaric acid and low pH — are hand-harvested in late September and early October.

In the cellar, Soares applied experience accumulated over decades working with producers in Burgundy and the Loire to a roster of autochthonous Vinho Verde varieties. Fermentation is spontaneous throughout the range. The defining technique is the addition of ground chestnut flowers — approximately 1 kg per 1,100-liter vessel — at the start of fermentation as a natural stabilizer, allowing the project to work with minimal or no added sulfur. Fermentation and maceration vessels include 100-year-old clay talhas (amphorae) and stainless steel tanks depending on the wine. All wines are bottled unfiltered.

Wine region

Vinho Verde, Portugal

Vinho Verde DOC is Portugal's largest demarcated wine region, covering approximately 21,000 hectares in the historic Minho province of northwestern Portugal. It is bounded by the Minho River to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Douro River near Porto to the south, and mountain ranges including Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira, and Marão to the east. The climate is distinctly Atlantic maritime, with annual rainfall often exceeding 1,200mm and cool, humid summers. Nine subregions — Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção e Melgaço, Paiva, and Sousa — each have meaningfully distinct microclimates within this framework.

Soils throughout the DOC are predominantly granitic, naturally acidic, well-draining, and low in fertility, producing wines with characteristic mineral acidity. Vineyards concentrate along river valleys including the Tâmega, with most sites sitting between 50 and 350 meters in elevation. White wine accounts for 86% of DOC production; recommended white varieties include Alvarinho, Arinto, Avesso, Azal, Loureiro, and Trajadura. Red varieties Vinhão, Borraçal, and Espadeiro are less widely planted but capable of producing intensely colored, high-acid wines when farmed carefully. Bojo do Luar's vineyards sit in the foothills of Serra do Marão, where warm harvest days and cool nights allow the chosen varieties to retain the tartaric acidity that defines the project's style.
