Tasting notes

This is Pinot Noir aimed squarely at drinkability: pale ruby, lightly perfumed, with red cherry fruit and a stemmy, spice-driven lift from whole-cluster fermentation. The short maceration keeps tannins silky and the 12% ABV means you can pour freely without thinking too hard about it.

Blossoms 2018 marks Gentle Folk's first vintage from a Norton Summit vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. The site sits at approximately 500 metres elevation on quartz over sandstone soils and has been farmed organically since planting. The vines, a mixture of Pinot Noir clones established around 25 years before this vintage, were taken over by Gareth and Rainbo Belton beginning with the 2018 harvest.

In the cellar, the fruit was fermented as whole bunches and handled lightly through a short maceration. No additions were made during winemaking beyond a minimal dose of sulfur at bottling, consistent with Gentle Folk's approach across the range. The result is a wine built for immediate pleasure rather than long cellaring.

At 12% ABV, Blossoms sits on the lighter end of the Gentle Folk Pinot Noir lineup. The whole-cluster approach lends a characteristic spice and lift, while the brief maceration keeps the tannin structure silky and the fruit expression fresh and direct. Think red cherry, wild strawberry, a floral top note, and a faint stemmy snap on the finish.

Norton Summit is a sub-locality within the Adelaide Hills wine region, roughly 12 kilometres east of Adelaide. The cool nights at this elevation slow ripening and preserve natural acidity, which is the defining feature of this wine's structure.

Serve lightly chilled with salmon rillettes, roast chicken with herbs, or a simple charcuterie board. The low tannin and bright acidity make it flexible at the table. It also works well alongside mushroom-based dishes where heavier reds would overpower.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton founded Gentle Folk in the Basket Range area of the Adelaide Hills, with their first vintage in 2013. Both are trained marine scientists, having completed PhDs focused on phycology (the study of seaweeds) before leaving academic life for viticulture. Their early exposure to the Basket Range wine scene came through neighbours James Erskine of Jauma and Alex Shulkin of The Other Right, whose approach to low-intervention winemaking aligned with the Beltons' own thinking.

Gentle Folk farms eight hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling across five sites in the western Adelaide Hills, including Scary Gully in Forest Range, Monomeith in Ashton, and the Little Creek vineyard in Norton Summit. Additional fruit is sourced from trusted growers in the region. All farming follows organic principles, with the stated aim of adding as little as possible in the vineyard and the cellar.

Winemaking at Gentle Folk uses wild fermentation exclusively. No additions are made during vinification, and a minimal dose of sulfur is added only at bottling. Across the Pinot Noir range, approaches vary by wine and site, from fully destemmed to 100% whole-cluster fermentation, with élevage in French oak of varying ages. The Blossoms cuvée uses whole-bunch fermentation with a short maceration, designed to maximise freshness and immediate drinkability.

Wine region

Adelaide Hills, Australia

The Adelaide Hills wine region covers areas of the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia at elevations above 300 metres, roughly 12 to 50 kilometres east of Adelaide. The region is among the coolest in Australia, with temperatures dropping approximately 0.5 degrees Celsius per 100 metres of elevation gain. This cool, slow-ripening environment preserves natural acidity and produces wines with more restraint and fragrance than the warmer South Australian regions of Barossa and McLaren Vale.

Soils across the Adelaide Hills are highly variable, ranging from sandy loams and loams through to clay loams over clay subsoils, frequently combined with shale, ironstone, quartz, and sandstone depending on topography. Two officially recognised sub-regions, Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley, have been delineated for their distinct soils and microclimates. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the flagship varieties, with Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Syrah, and Gamay also producing strong results. The steep terrain limits mechanical harvesting across much of the region, and hand-picking is standard practice.
