The Wine: La Cattiva Bianco Trebbiano 2021

Masseria La Cattiva Bianco Trebbiano is a white natural wine made from 100% organic Trebbiano grapes, short maceration, and then 6 months in stainless steel for a fresh and low-alcohol wine. No added sulfites.

The Project: Masseria La Cattiva

Masseria La Cattiva was formed by a group of friends – Leonardo, Alfredo, Paolo, Michele, Loreto, Manfredi, and Marianna – in love with natural wine and natural fermentations. Masseria La Cattiva is located in Sammichele di Bari, Apulia Region, Southern Italy, and used to be a cow-rearing facility, though it is surrounded by vineyards. At La Cattiva, everything is done by hand, the only products used in the vineyards are sulfur and copper. Vinification follows a rigorous low-interventionist approach.

Masseria La Cattiva, Natural Wine from Apulia, Italy - primalwine.com

The Region: Puglia

Apulia (Puglia in Italian) is a Southern Italian region, stretching from the Gargano Peninsula to the very tip of the heel of the Italian boot. Apulia is a major wine-producing region and is also the first producer of olive oil in Italy – it accounts for over 50% of the total olive oil production.

Apulia can be divided roughly into two parts: the north, characterized by higher altitudes and hilly landscapes and the south, a flatland also known as Salento. The two subregions, even though culturally different, are fairly similar in terms of agricultural output. Along with olive oil and wine, we can also find some unique grains and other specific high-quality crops such as onions and artichokes.

Apulian went from producing mostly low-quality bulk wine to a more sophisticated and high-quality production. A major change was lowering the average yield per hectare, a practice that has also been put into law thanks to the creation of several IGP, DOC, and DOCG appellations.

The Terroir of Puglia

Apulia benefits from a hot Mediterranean climate, with low humidity and good overall aeration. This results in healthy grapes that don’t require chemical treatments against disease or rot.

The prevalent soil formation is limestone, ideal for vine growing, although it’s often covered by layers rich in iron. Iron-rich soils are usually associated with flat and uninteresting wines. For this reason, the best Apulian wines are made from old vines, whose roots have dug deep past the iron-rich layers into limestone.

The Red Wines of Puglia

Puglia is definitely a land of red wines. All of Puglia DOCGs and most DOCs were created to regulate red wine production. The most widely planted red grape varietals are Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Nero di Troia. Other minor red grape varietals are Bombino Nero, Aleatico, Sangiovese, and Montepulciano.

Puglia’s first DOCG and perhaps most famous red wine is Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG, made with 100% Primitivo di Manduria grapes grown on clay and sandy soils with good water drainage. This great off-dry dark red wine is ample and complex with hints of prunes, sweet, velvety, and persistent on the palate.

A special mention for Puglia rose’ wines made from Primitivo, Negroamaro, or Bombino Nero mostly in the Salento subregion – the heel of Italy. They are very different from Provence-style rose’ in that they are more structured and higher in alcohol but nevertheless very good.

The White Wines of Puglia

White wine production in Puglia is far from being noteworthy although a lot of progress has been made in the past 20 years. Good examples of white wines from this region are wines made from Bombino Bianco or Verdeca grapes. We can also find quality white wines made from Campania region native grape varietals such as Greco, Fiano, and Falanghina.

Stress-Free Shipping

At Primal Wine, we like to be transparent about everything we do. When it comes to buying products online, shipping is the most important aspect, and that’s why we take great care in shipping and handling your order using only 100% recycled packaging material.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $25 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HEAT-RELATED ISSUES. WE OFFER ICE-PACKS AS ONE OF OUR SHIPPING OPTIONS. PLEASE SELECT THAT OPTION SHOULD YOU THINK THAT THERE COULD BE HEAT-RELATED ISSUES.
