Tasting notes

Bianco Folk is a rare chance to taste Montonico, an Abruzzese grape that nearly vanished, blended with Trebbiano and Pecorino in a skin-contact style that delivers stone fruit and citrus with a saline, mineral edge. At 10.5% ABV, it drinks with genuine freshness and just enough tannin from the maceration to give it grip without weight.

Bianco Folk is a skin-contact white from Cantina Indigeno, a producer based in Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo hills of Abruzzo. The wine blends three indigenous grapes: Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Montonico. Montonico is a rare aromatic variety that nearly disappeared from Abruzzo and has seen renewed interest among natural producers in the region only in recent years.

The grapes are grown organically at elevation in the Teramo province, on calcareous clay and limestone soils. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, with skin contact that imparts a slight tannic grip and additional aromatic complexity. No temperature control, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites.

After fermentation, the wine is aged in stainless steel, which preserves the freshness and primary fruit character. The result sits at 10.5% ABV, on the lighter end of the spectrum, with lifted aromatics, bright acidity, and a gentle texture from the maceration.

The 2018 vintage was the winery's third, produced from a combination of rented old vineyards and newly acquired parcels. At around 25,000 bottles total across their range that year, Cantina Indigeno was already exporting primarily to the United States and Japan.

Pair with seafood crudo, grilled sardines, or spaghetti alle vongole where the wine's acidity and saline texture echo the sea. It also works well alongside soft cheeses, bruschetta with olive oil, or lightly dressed vegetable dishes. Serve cold, around 48-52°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 in Montorio al Vomano, in the Teramo hills of Abruzzo, by four people who did not start as winemakers. Alfredo Giugno worked as an accountant and fermented beer as a hobby; Loreto Lamolinara distributed craft beers; together they opened a microbrewery called La Casa di Cura in Crognaleto in 2013. Nicola Reginaldi, a sommelier who owned a pub in Teramo, brought the group toward natural wine and shaped the winery's direction. Fabio Petrella completed the founding team. Their early approach was informed in part by proximity to Lammidia, another natural winery in Abruzzo whose team offered guidance at the outset.

Cantina Indigeno manages 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards around Teramo, supplemented by fruit purchased from local growers who farm using only copper and sulfur. The vines average around 30 years old and grow on stony calcareous clay and limestone soils. The winery works primarily with Montepulciano and Trebbiano, alongside lesser-known indigenous varieties including Pecorino and Montonico. Their first vintage in 2016 totaled approximately 5,000 bottles; by 2018, production had reached around 25,000 bottles following vineyard acquisitions. Most of their production is exported, with the United States and Japan as the primary markets.

Fermentation at Cantina Indigeno is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and carried out without temperature control or any additions. Grapes are hand-harvested. The winery uses no fining, no filtration, and adds no sulfur. Depending on the wine, maceration on skins ranges from several days to several weeks. Aging typically takes place in stainless steel or fiberglass containers, preserving freshness. The Bianco Folk undergoes skin-contact fermentation and is then aged in stainless steel before bottling.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo runs along central-eastern Italy between the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east, covering four provinces: Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila. The Teramo province in the north holds some of the region's most valued vineyard land, with calcareous clay and limestone soils, higher elevations, and meaningful diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity in the grapes. Coastal vineyards near Teramo benefit from Adriatic breezes that moderate summer temperatures and extend the growing season. Vineyard elevations within the DOC reach up to 600 meters, and in some south-facing sites up to 700 meters.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC, established in 1972, is the only Abruzzo appellation devoted exclusively to white wine and covers all four provinces. The Colline Teramane DOCG, elevated to that status in 2003, applies to Montepulciano from the Teramo hills and sits at the top of the regional quality hierarchy. Beyond Trebbiano and Montepulciano, indigenous varieties including Pecorino, Passerina, Cococciola, and Montonico are experiencing renewed interest. A growing cohort of natural producers in Abruzzo, particularly around Teramo, has attracted significant international attention for their spontaneous-fermentation, organically farmed wines.
