Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Farneto

Azienda Agricola Il Farneto was founded in the mid-1990s by Marco Bertoni, who envisioned a winery dedicated to sustainable agriculture and natural winemaking in an area dominated by industrial production. The 8-hectare estate is located in Castellarano, nestled between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa in western Emilia-Romagna, at elevations that provide isolation from the heavily industrialized valleys below.

The farm has operated according to biodynamic principles since 2003, earning certification for its commitment to soil health and biodiversity. The vineyards are densely planted at 4,000 vines per hectare on sandy clay soils, with vines averaging 15 years of age. In addition to grapes, the estate cultivates wheat and maintains farm animals—including donkeys—as part of its integrated agricultural approach.

Winemaker Flavio Restani crafts wines using traditional techniques that prioritize the long-term vitality of the land. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. For still wines like Berzmein, aging takes place in large old French oak barrels (up to 500 liters) that soften the wines without imparting overt oak character. The estate's sparkling wines—including the popular Frisant range—are produced using Metodo Ancestrale, with secondary fermentation in bottle. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfites.

Il Farneto focuses on indigenous grape varieties: Spergola and Malvasia for whites, Marzemino and Lambrusco Grasparossa for reds. The wines are named after the Rio Rocca, a local river celebrated for its geological features and natural wilderness. This naming reflects Bertoni's philosophy of connecting wine to place—each bottle expressing the specific terroir and traditions of this corner of Emilia.

The estate also works with rare varieties like Termarina, an ancient red grape surviving only in the region's oldest vineyards.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across north-central Italy, bordered by the Po River to the north and the Apennine Mountains to the south. This fertile region—famous for Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, and traditional balsamic vinegar—also possesses a rich viticultural heritage dating back to Etruscan and Roman times.

The western portion of Emilia, where Il Farneto is located, presents a landscape of rolling hills rising toward the Apennines. The estate sits between the towns of Scandiano and Canossa in the commune of Castellarano, an area defined by clay-rich soils and varied elevations that provide natural drainage and temperature moderation. The Rio Rocca river runs through this territory, lending its name to several of the estate's wines.

Emilia-Romagna's climate combines continental and Mediterranean influences. Winters are cold with occasional fog, while summers bring warmth tempered by breezes from the Apennines. This climatic interplay helps grapes retain acidity while achieving full phenolic ripeness—particularly important for indigenous red varieties like Marzemino, Lambrusco, and Malbo Gentile.

The region is best known internationally for Lambrusco, the sparkling red wine produced in enormous quantities across the plains. However, the hillside zones near Reggio Emilia and Modena support a quieter tradition of still wines from local grape varieties that have grown here for centuries. Marzemino, though more commonly associated with Trentino to the north, finds distinctive expression in Emilia's clay soils, producing wines of depth and aromatic complexity.

Natural and biodynamic winemaking has gained momentum in this area, with small producers reviving indigenous varieties and traditional methods abandoned during decades of industrial farming.
