Tasting notes

The 2019 Lantignié leads with a high-toned, floral nose — wildflowers and cherry over a stony mineral core — that is more Régnié-adjacent than your average Villages bottling. Whole-cluster carbonic maceration keeps the tannins silky while the Muscovite granite and blue clay push a freshness that carries through to a clean, aromatic finish.

Jean-Paul Dubost's Beaujolais-Lantignié comes from several parcels totaling roughly ten hectares surrounding the village of Lantignié, situated just south of Chiroubles and west of Régnié. The soils here are Muscovite granite and blue clay on the surface over a sandstone subsoil — a dual-faced terroir that sits physically adjacent to Morgon and Régnié and produces wines that consistently outperform their Villages-level classification. Vines are between 35 and 50 years old, planted at 10,000 vines per hectare.

Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified as whole clusters using carbonic maceration lasting approximately 7 to 15 days in stainless steel. The wine ages in stainless steel and concrete tanks, is filtered with kieselgur without fining, and is bottled with minimal added sulfur dioxide. Fermentation uses only spontaneous, indigenous yeasts. Residual sugar is under 2 grams per liter.

Jean-Paul described the 2019 vintage as one of finesse over power: yields were moderate at 40 to 45 hl/ha, and the wine shows less extraction than 2018 or 2020 while delivering notable freshness and aromatic lift. The nose is floral and high-toned with depth; the palate is driven by red fruit with lively acidity and soft tannins.

The domaine has been transitioning to biodynamic farming since 2005. All parcels are farmed fully organically or are in organic conversion. Jean-Paul is currently training his sons Jeoffrey and Corentin to take over the estate.

Works well with charcuterie, pork rillettes, or a simple roast chicken — the low tannin and bright acidity cut through fat without overwhelming lighter dishes. Also a reliable partner for earthy lentil dishes or mushroom-based preparations. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62°F, which keeps the freshness front and center.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jean-Paul Dubost

The domaine, originally called Domaine du Tracot after its address at 9 Impasse du Tracot in Lantignié, was purchased by the Dubost family in the 1960s with just six hectares. It has grown significantly since then, with Jean-Paul currently farming approximately 21 to 26 hectares across Lantignié, Brouilly, Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, Fleurie, and a small portion of Régnié. The estate produces roughly 150,000 bottles per year, approximately half of which is exported.

Jean-Paul assumed control in the mid-1990s and began shifting all parcels toward organic practices. Since 2005, he has been transitioning the vineyards to biodynamics. Today, all parcels are either fully organically farmed or in organic conversion. No synthetic chemicals are used. The Lantignié parcels — approximately eight to ten hectares — are planted to Gamay in Muscovite granite and blue clay soils with sandstone subsoil, with vine age ranging from 35 to 50 years and a planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare.

In the cellar, Jean-Paul uses spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts throughout the range. For the Lantignié, grapes are harvested by hand, kept as whole clusters, and undergo carbonic maceration for approximately 7 to 15 days in stainless steel. Aging takes place in stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wine is filtered with kieselgur but not fined, and bottled with very low levels of added sulfur dioxide. Cru wines from the domaine are made without any sulfur additions.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

Beaujolais runs from the southern edge of the Mâconnais down to the outskirts of Lyon, covering roughly 67 square miles of rolling hills between the Massif Central foothills and the Saône River plain. The region divides broadly into a southern zone of clay and limestone soils suited to lighter, fruit-driven wines and a northern zone — the Haut Beaujolais — where decomposed granite, gneiss, schist, and sandstone dominate at elevations between 200 and 500 meters. The northern zone is home to Beaujolais-Villages and all ten Beaujolais Crus.

Lantignié is one of 38 communes authorized to append its name to the Beaujolais-Villages AOC designation, appearing on labels as Beaujolais-Lantignié rather than the generic Beaujolais-Villages. The village sits just west of Régnié and Morgon and has two distinct soil faces: western parcels feature bluestone subsoils similar to Côte de Brouilly and Côte du Py, while eastern parcels sit on granitic sand and pink-inflected granite closer in character to Chiroubles. Lantignié's growers have organized under the Vignerons et Terroirs de Lantignié to advocate for tighter yield limits and greater appellation recognition, with some producers and commentators suggesting the village has cru-level potential.
