Tasting notes

Barbera from the Nizza subzone is a different animal from everyday Barbera d'Asti: the sandy-clay marl soils of Scrimaglio at 250 meters give this wine a darker, denser core of red fruit, bitter chocolate, and coffee, while the grape's natural acidity keeps it lively and food-friendly even at ten years of age. The 16-month aging in large oak casks (40 to 65 hl) adds structure without masking the fruit or the site.

This is 100% Barbera from Oddero's organically farmed vineyard in località Scrimaglio, Nizza Monferrato, at 250 meters above sea level with south-facing exposure. Vines range from 30 to 60 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand in late September and fermented with skin contact for approximately 15 days in stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in November.

Aging lasts 16 months in large oak casks of 40 to 65 hectoliters, with assemblage in spring and bottling in summer. The 2015 growing season in Piedmont was marked by the hottest July since 1880, offset by good water reserves from a wet winter and well-timed August rains that prevented drought stress. Barbera performed brilliantly that year, producing ripe, concentrated fruit with retained acidity.

The wine opens with a deep ruby color that acquires garnet highlights with age. The nose shows red fruit, bitter chocolate, and coffee, gaining spice and wilder herbal notes over time. On the palate it is dry and full-bodied, with Barbera's characteristically high acidity providing freshness and structure despite the generous fruit. The Nizza DOCG, which gained its own independent appellation in 2014, mandates 100% Barbera and requires a minimum of 18 months aging including six months in wood — positioning this bottling among Piedmont's most serious Barbera expressions.

Oddero has farmed its Barbera and Dolcetto vineyards organically, and the entire estate's organic program began in 2007, with certified organic status achieved progressively across all varietals.

The high acidity and firm body make this a reliable match for braised and slow-cooked meats — brasato al Barbera, lamb shoulder, or beef short rib. It also cuts through aged Piedmontese cheeses like Castelmagno or Toma. Pasta dishes with rich meat ragù or mushroom-based sauces work well.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Oddero

Poderi e Cantine Oddero is based in the frazione Santa Maria of La Morra, in the Langhe hills of Piedmont. The Oddero family has been documented in the La Morra area since at least the 18th century, and the first Giacomo Oddero (1851-1915) began bottling wine under the family name in 1878 — among the earliest estate-bottled Barolo producers. By the late 19th century, Oddero Barolo was already being exported to the Americas. The estate today farms 35 hectares across key crus in Barolo, Barbaresco, and Asti, including Brunate and Rocche di Castiglione in Barolo and the Scrimaglio site in Nizza Monferrato.

The current generation is led by Mariacristina Oddero and her children Isabella and Pietro, representing the sixth and seventh generations of the family. Organic farming practices were introduced beginning in 2007, starting with vineyards closest to the cellar in La Morra and expanding progressively. Today all Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto vineyards at Oddero are certified organic. The estate also incorporates elements of biodynamic philosophy in its soil management, though it does not carry biodynamic certification.

For the Nizza DOCG, grapes are hand-harvested at the Scrimaglio site in late September. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel vats for approximately 15 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in November. The wine then ages for 16 months in large oak casks of 40 to 65 hectoliters, is assembled in spring, and bottled in summer. From the 2014 vintage onward, this wine qualifies under the Nizza DOCG appellation.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

The Nizza DOCG sits in the southeastern corner of Piedmont's Monferrato hills, centered on the town of Nizza Monferrato in the province of Asti. The appellation was elevated from a subzone of Barbera d'Asti Superiore to its own independent DOCG in 2014, making it Italy's first standalone single-varietal Barbera appellation. The production zone covers 18 communes and approximately 1,500 hectares. Soils are calcareous, composed of sandy-clay marls and stratified sandstones formed from ancient Pliocene-era seabed deposits. Hill elevations range from 150 to 350 meters above sea level, with vineyards planted on south- to west-facing slopes to maximize ripening.

The climate is continental with warm, dry summers and concentrated rainfall in spring and autumn. These conditions — combined with the region's distinctive blue marl subsoil — allow Barbera to achieve full ripeness while retaining its characteristic high acidity and building more tannin structure than in neighboring Barbera d'Asti or Barbera d'Alba zones. Nizza DOCG requires 100% Barbera (unlike Barbera d'Asti, which allows up to 10% other red grapes) and a minimum of 18 months aging with at least six months in wood for the standard bottling and 30 months for Riserva. Barbera d'Asti received DOCG status in 2008; the Nizza subzone's own DOCG began with the 2014 harvest.
