Tasting notes

Loire Côt aged in terracotta amphora is a rare combination — the vessel preserves the grape's dark fruit and violet character while adding roundness without any oak signature. At 14% from a warm 2015 growing season, it has real weight but stays focused, with the clay-silica soils of Azay-le-Rideau providing mineral grip on the finish.

Aziaum Rouge is a single-parcel wine from the Jardin à la Boulaudière vineyard in Azay-le-Rideau, Touraine. It is made from 100% Côt — the Loire Valley name for Malbec — grown on clay over silica soils above a tuffeau limestone bedrock. The estate is certified biodynamic under Demeter and AB France. Sold as Vin de France, as the Touraine Azay-le-Rideau AOC covers only white and rosé wines.

Quentin Bourse harvests by hand in multiple passes with a crew of around 25, sorting the grapes four times before fermentation. All reds at Le Sot de l'Ange undergo whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and zero sulfur is added during the winemaking process. This cuvée is aged in terracotta amphora, which imparts texture and oxygen micro-exchange without introducing wood tannins or oak flavor.

The 2015 vintage in the Loire delivered warm, dry conditions that produced ripe, concentrated fruit with good structure. At 14% ABV, this is a fuller expression of Loire Côt — darker and more structured than the entry-level blends from the domaine — reflecting both the specific Jardin à la Boulaudière parcel and the warmth of the growing season.

The structure and dark fruit of Loire Côt work well with braised lamb, duck confit, or a mushroom-heavy ragù. The earthy, slightly spiced character is also a good match for aged goat cheese from the Loire such as Sainte-Maure de Touraine. Serve around 62-65°F; a 20-30 minute decant will help open the wine.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Sot de l'Ange

Quentin Bourse took over a friend's estate in Azay-le-Rideau in time for the 2013 vintage, making that the first release under the Le Sot de l'Ange label. Before establishing the domaine, he completed internships with both natural and conventional producers in the Loire, including a six-month stage at Domaine Huet in Vouvray. Angélique Bourse joined the operation in 2015. The name Le Sot de l'Ange translates roughly as 'the angel's fool' or 'the idiot angel.'

The estate farms 12 hectares of vines on clay over silica soils in Azay-le-Rideau and holds Demeter and AB France biodynamic certification — one of very few certified biodynamic estates in the appellation. Copper sulfur applications are limited to 500 grams per year, roughly 75% less than the regional norm. All harvesting is done by hand, with approximately 25 people picking in multiple passes to select fruit at peak maturity.

In the cellar, grapes are sorted four times before whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Pressing is slow and gentle, sometimes lasting five or more hours. For all red wines, zero sulfur dioxide is added at any stage. Aging vessel varies by cuvée — the Aziaum Rouge is aged in terracotta amphora. The wines are neither fined nor filtered.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

The Touraine Azay-le-Rideau PDO covers approximately 50 hectares across six to eight communes in Indre-et-Loire, situated between the Indre and Loire river valleys. The vineyard sits at altitudes of 40 to 80 meters on slopes overlooking the Indre River. The underlying bedrock is tuffeau limestone, formed roughly 90 million years ago, which regulates water and mineral supply and stores daytime heat to release to the vines overnight. The three main soil types over this bedrock are perruches (flinty clay-silica), aubuis (clay-limestone), and aeolian sands.

The appellation operates under an oceanic-continental climate, with mild winters and warm, bright summers averaging 20°C from July through September and approximately 1,950 to 2,050 sunshine hours annually. The formal AOC, established in 1953 for whites and expanded in 1976 for rosés, covers only Chenin Blanc whites and Grolleau-based rosés. Red wines made from Côt (Malbec), Gamay, and Cabernet Franc in this area are sold under the broader Touraine AOC or as Vin de France. Touraine reds from Côt are known for dark fruit, color, structure, and spicy notes.
