Tasting notes

The technique here flips the orange wine script: Merlot juice ferments on Chardonnay skins rather than the other way around, yielding a golden-amber wine with the texture of a skin-contact white and the faint red-fruit undercurrent of a rosé. Eight months in neutral barrel adds weight without oak flavor, and the zero-additions approach keeps the fruit from Olson Ranch's 500-foot gravelly site front and center.

Áureo is a skin-contact wine made from estate-grown fruit in the Sonoma Valley AVA. The blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Chardonnay, sourced from Olson Ranch, a 3.5-acre cane-pruned Merlot block planted in 1994 by Phil Coturri. The Merlot vines are Clone 181 on Rootstock 5C, grown in gravelly loam clay soil at 500 feet elevation. The name Áureo means "gilded" or "layered in gold" in Latin, a reference to the wine's golden-amber color.

The winemaking technique is unusual: Merlot juice is direct-pressed and then fermented on Chardonnay skins rather than Merlot skins, making this effectively a macerated rosé rather than a conventional orange wine. The must is manually destemmed into an open-top fermenter, punched down by hand until dry, then basket-pressed into neutral barrel for eight months. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeast, and the wine is unfiltered with no added sulfites. It is produced and bottled at Coturri Winery in Sonoma Valley.

The Olson Ranch fruit is sustainably farmed, and all Marioni wines are made with a zero-additions philosophy: nothing added, nothing removed. The gravelly loam clay soils and 500-foot elevation of the site contribute to natural freshness and texture in the finished wine.

The wine's texture and mild tannins from Chardonnay skin contact make it a strong match for roasted chicken, grilled fish with herb sauces, or a cheese board anchored by aged gouda or semi-firm sheep's milk cheese. It also holds up well alongside dishes with a little richness, like a mushroom and leek tart or lightly spiced lentils.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Dan Marioni

Dan Marioni is a fifth-generation Sonoma native who holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and spent approximately five years working at Tesla before transitioning into winemaking. In 2016, he went to Coturri Winery in Glen Ellen to work harvest and did not leave. He began working with Nic Coturri on the Sonoma Mtn Winery label, learning what is known as the Coturri approach to winemaking: nothing added, nothing taken away.

In 2019, Dan took over winemaking responsibilities from Nic Coturri and launched his own label, Marioni Wine, producing wine at Magnolia Wine Services in Sonoma and at Coturri Winery. The farming philosophy prioritizes organic practices, with no pesticides or chemicals, minimal sulfur, and minimal irrigation. The estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley are hand-farmed, and Marioni has described the label's mission as proving that intentional farming leads to higher quality wines.

Áureo is produced and bottled at Coturri Winery. Fruit comes from Olson Ranch in the Sonoma Valley AVA, a block originally planted and farmed by Phil Coturri. Winemaking is zero-intervention: spontaneous fermentation in open-top fermenters, hand punch-downs, basket press, and eight months in neutral barrel. The wine is unfiltered and bottled with no added sulfites.

Wine region

Sonoma Valley, USA

Sonoma Valley AVA sits in the southeastern corner of Sonoma County, bounded to the west by the Sonoma Mountains and to the east by the Mayacamas Range. The valley is the driest area in all of Sonoma County, sheltered from Pacific fog by the surrounding peaks. Cooling influence comes northward from San Pablo Bay through the Los Carneros region, producing significant diurnal temperature swings that preserve natural acidity in the grapes.

Soils in Sonoma Valley vary considerably across the appellation, from fertile loamy valley floor soils with clay pockets to rockier, well-drained foothill sites. The Olson Ranch, the source vineyard for Áureo, sits at 500 feet in gravelly loam clay. Sonoma Valley's primary red varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel, with Chardonnay dominant among whites. The AVA was officially recognized in 1981 and encompasses approximately 5,500 acres under vine.
