Tasting notes

Whole-cluster, 12-month skin maceration in terracotta amphora is rare even by natural wine standards — this process gives the 2012 a dried-fruit depth, earthy complexity, and tannic structure that reads more like an aged Barolo than anything from the south. At over a decade old, it is drinking in a compelling window of evolution, with integrated tannins and a long, mineral finish.

The Clown Oenologue is Cantina Giardino's amphora-driven Aglianico, sourced from vines over 80 years old at the Montemarano vineyard in Irpinia, Campania. Grapes are harvested by hand in late October or early November and fermented whole-cluster with no destemming directly in 200-liter terracotta amphorae, where skin contact continues for approximately 12 months with no added sulfur. The wine is then manually pressed in wood and transferred to old large oak barrels for a further 12 months of aging. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no additions of any kind.

Production is extremely limited — around 150 cases per vintage. The Montemarano vineyard sits within the province of Avellino on volcanic and clay-limestone soils at high elevation, adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG zone. Aglianico here ripens late, often into November, developing firm tannins, pronounced acidity, and dark fruit character that rewards extended cellaring.

At over a decade from harvest, the 2012 shows the evolution characteristic of amphorae-raised, whole-cluster Aglianico: notes of dried dark fruit, earth, tobacco, and garrigue, with tannins that have had time to integrate. The wine retains the structural grip and cool-toned acidity that define Irpinia Aglianico, alongside the oxidative complexity introduced by extended amphora contact.

Classified as Campania IGT, which gives Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola the flexibility to work outside the formal DOCG framework while drawing from one of the most respected Aglianico growing areas in southern Italy.

The wine's firm structure and high acidity make it a natural match for slow-braised meat dishes — think wild boar ragu, lamb shoulder, or beef brasato. Aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino di Fossa or Parmigiano Reggiano hold up to the tannins. Avoid delicate fish or lightly seasoned dishes; this wine needs food with weight and fat.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino, in the mountainous heart of Irpinia, Campania. Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola began making wine in the late 1990s with a group of friends in the garage of a figure known locally as Professor Giardino — the source of the winery's name. The project became a commercial venture in 2003, with a founding purpose that remains unchanged: identify and rescue abandoned old-vine parcels of indigenous Irpinian grapes that local farmers could no longer maintain economically. Industrial farming had prompted widespread replanting of international varieties or outright vineyard abandonment throughout the province.

The estate currently manages approximately seven hectares across sixteen parcels in the province of Avellino, planted to Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Coda di Volpe, with some vines exceeding 100 years old. All vineyard work is done by hand, organically. Vines are trained in the traditional alberello (bush vine) method, which can only be worked manually. Grass, herbs, and flowers grow among the rows, and neighboring olive and fruit trees are common in the older parcels. Antonio trained in food technology before specializing in viticulture and oenology in Piedmont; Daniela studied architecture and handcrafts terracotta amphorae from soil taken directly from the vineyards.

In the cellar, Antonio ferments with indigenous yeasts only, without temperature control — fermentation can continue for months. Aging vessels include terracotta and sandstone amphorae, and large casks of local chestnut, cherry, acacia, and mulberry. No fining, no filtration, and no sulfites are added at any stage. Each vintage's label is created by a different local artist. Cantina Giardino was among the first producers in Italy to use long skin macerations and terracotta amphorae for red wine, and was a pioneer of zero-addition winemaking in the country from its earliest releases.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Campania occupies the southwestern toe of the Italian peninsula, stretching from the coast around Naples inland to the rugged Apennine foothills. The region divides broadly between the coastal zones near Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast and the mountainous interior of Irpinia, within the province of Avellino. Irpinia sits at elevation, with vineyards typically between 400 and 700 meters above sea level, and experiences a continental rather than Mediterranean climate — warm summers, cold winters, and large diurnal temperature swings that allow Aglianico to achieve phenolic ripeness while retaining high natural acidity. Harvest in Irpinia often extends into November, making it one of the last picked in Italy.

Campania holds four DOCG appellations: Taurasi (Aglianico reds), Fiano di Avellino (whites), Greco di Tufo (whites), and Aglianico del Taburno. Irpinia also carries its own DOC designation. The soils across Irpinia are a layered mix of volcanic ash, clay, limestone, and sand, with tuff formations from historic eruptions contributing mineral complexity. Cantina Giardino's wines fall under the Campania IGT classification, which gives producers latitude to work with single-vineyard sites and extended macerations outside the strict DOCG production rules. Taurasi DOCG, the benchmark for Campanian red wine, requires a minimum of three years aging and produces wines known for decades-long cellaring potential.
