Tasting notes

This pet nat actually tastes like Gamay: the effervescence amplifies the grape's natural cranberry and raspberry character rather than masking it. The white clay and flint soils of Azay-le-Rideau push a stony, wet-granite minerality through the fruit, giving the wine grip and direction that most pet nats lack.

Marie Thibault's 'La Roue Qui Tourne' is a petillant naturel rose made from 100% old-vine Gamay grown on her single contiguous parcel in Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau. The vines are approximately 50 years old, planted in white clay and silex (flint) soils over Tuffeau limestone bedrock at 40-80 meters elevation. Farming has been certified organic by Ecocert since 2014.

The wine is made in the methode ancestrale: fermentation begins in tank, and the wine is bottled before it finishes. The remaining sugars ferment in bottle, creating a gentle, natural effervescence with no added CO2. No sulfur is added at any stage.

The result is a deeply colored rose pet nat that reads more like a red wine in a fizzy format. It is dry, earthy, and mineral, with red fruit character driven by the Gamay grape rather than winemaking additives. Expect cranberry, raspberry, and cherry against a backbone of wet stone and flint.

Thibault operates a 3.5-hectare estate in Lignières-de-Touraine, within the Azay-le-Rideau appellation. She also works with partner Frantz Saumon on a negociant project called Un Saumon dans la Loire, sourcing certified organic fruit from neighboring growers in the region.

Serve with charcuterie, pate, or rillettes — the wine's acidity and slight earthiness cut through fat cleanly. It also works well with fried foods, grain salads with pickled vegetables, or a simple plate of soft cheese. Light enough to function as an aperitif, but structured enough to hold its own alongside food.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marie Thibault

Marie Thibault grew up in the Loire Valley without a winemaking background. She holds degrees in vegetal biology and oenology, and began her career in 2002 working at Domaine Francois Chidaine in Montlouis-sur-Loire. She started producing wine under her own name in 2004 and purchased her current estate in 2010, taking over a 3.5-hectare parcel of approximately 50-year-old vines in Lignières-de-Touraine within the Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau appellation.

The estate is a single, contiguous parcel on a gentle, windy slope that is drier than the plateau-sited vineyards typical of the appellation. Soils are white clay and silex (flint) over Tuffeau limestone bedrock. Thibault converted to organic farming immediately upon acquiring the estate in 2010 and received Ecocert organic certification in 2014. She grows Chenin Blanc, Gamay, Grolleau, and Cot (Malbec). Most vines are around 50 years old.

Winemaking across the estate uses native yeasts with no added sulfur dioxide, or minimal sulfur at most at bottling depending on the cuvee. The 'La Roue Qui Tourne' rose pet nat is made by the methode ancestrale: grapes are fermented in tank, then bottled before fermentation finishes. The wine completes its fermentation in bottle, producing natural carbonation with no additions. Thibault also collaborates with her partner Frantz Saumon on a negociant label, Un Saumon dans la Loire, sourcing certified organic grapes from growers across the region.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau is a small AOC established in 1953, covering approximately 50 hectares across several communes — including Azay-le-Rideau, Lignières-de-Touraine, and Cheillé — in Indre-et-Loire. The vineyards sit at 40-80 meters elevation between the Indre and Loire rivers, in a microclimate shaped by the confluence of those two waterways. The climate is oceanic, with mild winters and warm summers averaging around 20 degrees Celsius from July through September. Annual rainfall is relatively low, and the slope exposures tend to be well-ventilated and drier than surrounding plateau sites.

The appellation sits on Tuffeau limestone bedrock formed roughly 90 million years ago. Over this bedrock lie three main soil types: perruches (flinty clay-silica conglomerates), aubuis (warm, permeable clay-limestone), and aeolian sands. The appellation is best known for Chenin Blanc whites and Grolleau-based roses, though Gamay is also planted here and authorized in rose production. The broader Touraine AOC, of which Azay-le-Rideau is a geographic sub-denomination, includes notable neighboring sub-appellations such as Touraine-Amboise, Touraine-Mesland, and Touraine-Chenonceaux.
