Spanish Wine

Spain's natural wine scene has exploded over the past decade, driven by a new generation of winemakers rejecting the heavy oak and high alcohol of conventional Spanish wine in favor of freshness, terroir, and indigenous varieties. Our Spanish collection covers Galicia's briny, Atlantic-influenced whites; Catalonia's experimental orange wines and carbonic reds; the high-altitude vineyards of the Meseta; Basque txakoli; and the old-vine treasures of La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Jerez.

Spain grows more vineyard area than any country on earth, and its regional range is vast. In the green northwest, Galicia gives crisp, saline Albarino in Rias Baixas and mineral reds from Mencia in Ribeira Sacra, where growers farm terraces so steep they are worked entirely by hand. Along the Basque coast, txakoli is picked early and bottled with a light spritz, all lemon zest and sea air. Inland, the old-vine plantings of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Toro give Tempranillo real depth, while a wave of independent growers in Catalonia, Sierra de Gredos, and Andalucia are reviving forgotten parcels of Garnacha, Cariñena, and Palomino.

A common thread here is careful farming. Many of these wines come from organically and biodynamically tended vineyards, fermented with native yeasts and bottled with little or no added sulfur. That approach lets Spain's grapes and soils speak clearly, whether that means a chalky manzanilla-style white, a floral high-altitude Garnacha, or a skin-contact white from Catalonia. Many of the producers here work at a tiny scale, farming a few hectares of old bush vines and making wine with minimal equipment.

If you are new to Spanish natural wine, a light Mencia or a coastal Albarino is an easy place to start. For something more adventurous, try an orange wine from Catalonia or a lightly oxidative white from the Jerez area. Explore more of our range in the orange wine and red wine collections.

Conventional Spanish wine, especially from Rioja, is often defined by long oak aging and ripe, high-alcohol fruit. Many of the producers in this collection go the other way, favoring freshness, indigenous grapes, and transparency of place. They tend to farm organically or biodynamically, ferment with native yeasts, and add little or no sulfur, so the wine tastes of its region rather than of the cellar.

You will find Albarino and Mencia from Galicia, txakoli from the Basque coast, Tempranillo from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, and Garnacha and Cariñena from Catalonia and Sierra de Gredos, along with old-vine whites and skin-contact wines from across the country. The lineup changes as small growers release new cuvees.

Many of the wines we carry come from organically or biodynamically farmed vineyards. Not every grower holds formal certification, since many are small family estates, but the farming tends to be clean and low-intervention in the vineyard and the cellar alike.

Txakoli is a Basque white picked early for high acidity and bottled with a light natural spritz. Expect green apple, lemon, and a saline, sea-air freshness at low alcohol. It is traditionally poured from a height to accentuate the fizz and is a classic partner for seafood and pintxos.

It is some of the most food-friendly wine there is. Crisp Albarino and txakoli suit seafood and tapas, Mencia and lighter Garnacha work with grilled vegetables and charcuterie, and structured Tempranillo stands up to lamb, jamon, and hard cheeses like Manchego.
