Red Wine

Our natural red wine collection spans the full spectrum of style and structure, from pale, crunchy Gamay and Nerello Mascalese to dense, age-worthy Nebbiolo, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc. Many are made from organically or biodynamically farmed grapes, fermented with native yeasts and bottled with minimal intervention. Producers range from legendary Burgundy estates to small-batch California winemakers working outside any appellation rules.

Read more about natural red wine

Red is where natural wine shows its full range. At the light end sit the chillable reds, made from grapes like Gamay, Nerello Mascalese, Cinsault, and Schiava, often fermented whole-cluster or by carbonic maceration for a bright, juicy, low-tannin style meant to be served cool. In the middle are the food-friendly classics: Sangiovese, Grenache, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc, wines with fresh acidity and gentle structure that pair with almost anything. At the serious end are the age-worthy bottles, Nebbiolo, Syrah, Mourvedre, and old-vine field blends built for the cellar.

Many share a common approach in the cellar: fruit from organically or biodynamically farmed vineyards, fermentation with the yeasts that arrive on the grapes rather than commercial strains, and additions kept to a minimum, including little or no added sulfur. That approach tends to produce reds with more energy and transparency: you taste the place and the vintage rather than a house recipe or heavy oak.

If you like your reds light and refreshing, start with a chillable Gamay or an Etna red. For weeknight drinking, a natural Sangiovese or Grenache is endlessly versatile. And if you are building a cellar, the Nebbiolo and Syrah here reward patience. Use the filters to sort by body, country, and grape, and explore related styles in our orange and best-selling natural wine collections.

Red wine is made from dark-skinned grape varieties, and its color comes not from the juice itself, which is typically clear, but from contact with the grape skins during fermentation. This process, called maceration, is what gives red wine its characteristic color, ranging from pale ruby to deep purple, as well as its tannins, which contribute to the wine's structure and texture. The length of skin contact, the grape variety, the fermentation temperature, and the aging vessel all shape the final style of the wine. At Primal Wine, the red wine collection includes over 600 bottles from producers in France, Italy, Spain, Austria, the United States, and beyond, many made from organic or biodynamic grapes with minimal intervention in the cellar.

The world's most widely planted and celebrated red wine grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Gamay, and Malbec. Each grape variety produces wines with a distinct personality. Cabernet Sauvignon is known for firm tannins, dark fruit, and aging potential. Pinot Noir produces lighter-bodied wines with bright acidity, red cherry, and earthy notes. Nebbiolo, the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco in Piedmont, is prized for its complexity, high tannins, and long aging requirements. Gamay, the grape of Beaujolais, makes some of the most drinkable and food-friendly reds in the world, with juicy fruit, low tannins, and a freshness that has made it a cornerstone of the natural wine movement. The Primal Wine red wine collection covers all of these varieties and more, from everyday bottles starting at $25 to cellar-worthy classics from Piedmont, Tuscany, and the Rhône Valley.

Body refers to how a wine feels in your mouth, and it is influenced primarily by alcohol level, tannins, and the grape variety itself. Light-bodied red wines tend to have lower alcohol, softer tannins, and a more delicate texture. Gamay from Beaujolais and Poulsard from the Jura are classic examples. They are often described as juicy, fresh, or even chillable, and they pair well with a wide range of foods, including fish, poultry, and charcuterie. Full-bodied red wines have higher alcohol, more pronounced tannins, and a richer mouthfeel. Barolo, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Aglianico, and Malbec from Cahors fall into this category. They pair naturally with red meat, aged cheeses, and hearty stews. Medium-bodied reds sit in between and represent the largest portion of the Primal Wine red wine collection, with 433 out of 708 listed bottles in that style, covering grape varieties like Sangiovese, Grenache, Montepulciano, and Cabernet Franc.

Natural red wine starts in the vineyard with organically or biodynamically farmed grapes, hand-harvested and brought to the cellar without synthetic additions. From there, fermentation happens with native yeasts found naturally on the grape skins rather than commercial yeast strains added by the winemaker. The wine is typically bottled unfined and unfiltered, which means it retains more of its original texture, character, and living microbiology. Sulfites, if used at all, are added in very small amounts, typically between 10 and 80 parts per million, compared to the 350 ppm permitted in conventional winemaking. The result is often a wine that tastes more alive, more site-specific, and more variable from vintage to vintage than a conventionally produced bottle. Some natural reds are cloudy, some have a slight effervescence, and many have flavors that surprise drinkers who are used to more polished, standardized styles. All red wines in the Primal Wine collection are made from organically or biodynamically farmed grapes, and the majority follow natural or low-intervention winemaking practices.

Italy produces some of the world's most respected red wines, and the conversation typically starts with three: Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, and Amarone della Valpolicella. Barolo is made from Nebbiolo in Piedmont's Langhe hills and is often called the King of Italian wines. It is structured, tannic, and aromatic, with notes of tar, roses, dried cherry, and leather, and it needs years in the cellar to fully express itself. Brunello di Montalcino comes from a single hilltop commune in Tuscany and is made from Sangiovese Grosso. It has some of Italy's strictest aging requirements: a minimum of five years before release, with Riserva wines aged for six. Amarone della Valpolicella, from the Veneto, is made using the appassimento method, where grapes are dried before fermentation, concentrating sugars and flavor compounds. The result is a powerful, opulent red wine with dark fruit, chocolate, and spice. The Primal Wine red wine collection features bottles from Piedmont producers like G.D. Vajra and Guido Porro, alongside Tuscan and Abruzzese producers such as Emidio Pepe, whose Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is considered one of Italy's most important natural wines.

Primal Wine ships red wines to 45 states across the United States, with orders processed within 2 to 3 business days. The red wine collection spans over 700 bottles, organized by country, region, grape variety, and wine style, so it is easy to filter by what you are looking for. Prices start at $25 per bottle for everyday drinking wines and go up to $250 for prestige bottles like Emidio Pepe's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Orders over $299 ship free. For shoppers who want a curated monthly selection rather than choosing bottle by bottle, the Primal Wine red wine club sends a hand-picked case of natural and organic red wines each month, along with tasting notes and a recipe card. There is also a mystery case option for those who enjoy a surprise.
