Tasting notes

Bright ruby-red with a vivid, translucent depth. The nose is fresh and fruit-driven, with ripe cherry, crushed raspberry, violet, and a hint of garrigue spice. On the palate, the wine is soft, lively, and dry, with low tannins, bright acidity, and a clean, uncomplicated finish.

  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red with a fruit-forward, carbonic character; the whole-bunch carbonic maceration gives a supple, low-tannin texture and vivid fresh fruit profile typical of this technique; accessible on release and designed for easy drinking
  • Grapes & terroir: Carignan and Grenache; organically farmed on clay-limestone soils in the Hérault valley, Languedoc; parcels at Gignac surrounded by garrigue scrubland and at Plaissan; low yields averaging 15 hl/ha; cellar located in Vendémian
  • Winemaking: Whole-bunch carbonic maceration for 15 days in fiberglass tanks; hand-harvested and sorted; pressed; fiberglass aging; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfur at any point
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 57–61°F; no decanting required; works particularly well slightly cool; suitable for immediate drinking on release
  • Pairing: Spanish chorizo
  • Similar to: Consumers familiar with Beaujolais crus made by carbonic maceration, or light, juicy southern Rhône reds with a natural wine approach, will find a familiar style here; the garrigue notes place it firmly in southern France

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Mas Pas Re

Mas Pas Re is the estate of Julien Trichard and Sara Hernandez, established at a farmhouse in the Hérault valley whose core dates to the 13th century. The estate covers 11 hectares of vines across the communes of Gignac and Plaissan, planted with a mix of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Julien and Sara have positioned their cellar in a renovated former cooperative building in Vendémian, a decision that both gave them access to larger working space and placed them in the center of the local wine community.

Farming follows certified organic principles under the Agriculture Biologique label. In the vineyard, pruning is done with particular care to keep yields very low, currently averaging around 15 hectolitres per hectare, with the aim of improving grape concentration from the start rather than correcting in the cellar. All harvesting is done by hand, with grapes selected and sorted in the vineyard and brought in by crate. Biodynamic practices also inform their approach to soil health and the broader agricultural life of the estate.

In the winery, the philosophy is the same regardless of the cuvée: no commercial yeasts, no fining agents, no filtration, and no added sulfur. Fermentations are spontaneous. The two cuvées available at Primal Wine demonstrate the range of approaches at Mas Pas Re: Sur le Pouce uses whole-bunch carbonic maceration, producing a fresh, light red, while Nature Peinture is a more structured blend built on destemmed maceration and longer aging. A rosé, two whites, a bag-in-box, and a late-harvest wine round out the full range.

Wine region

Languedoc–Roussillon, France

The Hérault department sits in the geographic center of Languedoc, the broad Mediterranean wine corridor that stretches from the Rhône delta in the east to the Pyrenées in the west. This is the most intensely planted wine-producing territory in France by area, and over the past two decades it has also become one of the most active regions for organic and natural winemaking. The communes of Gignac, Plaissan, and Vendémian, where Julien Trichard and Sara Hernandez farm and vinify, are located in the rolling inland hills of the Hérault valley, roughly 30 kilometres northwest of Montpellier and well removed from the coastal plain.

Vendémian is a small village whose name itself reflects the long viticultural history of the area, deriving from the Latin for grape harvest. The landscape here is characteristically Mediterranean garrigue: a mosaic of low scrubland, oak, thyme, rosemary, and vine, punctuated by outcroppings of clay-limestone that define much of the soil character across the hillside vineyards. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild, and the growing season long. The Mistral and Tramontane winds, funnelled through the valley corridors, moderate temperatures and reduce pressure from fungal disease, supporting the kind of organic farming that Mas Pas Re practices.

Wines from this part of Languedoc fall outside the named AOC zones and are typically labelled Vin de France or IGP Pays d'Hérault, giving producers like Julien and Sara the flexibility to blend freely and work across several parcels and communes. Carignan and Grenache, the two varieties at the heart of Sur le Pouce, are the historic backbone of southern French red wine production and have been grown in the Hérault for generations, thriving in its warm, stony terrain.
