Producer profile

Farnea

Marco Buratti's Azienda Agricola Farnea is nestled in the picturesque Colli Euganei National Park, comprising about two vineyards and three woodlands. This region has a rich history of grape cultivation dating back to the eighteenth century, mainly due to its vibrant volcanic soils. Marco, who cleared a forest area to plant his vines in 2003, tends to his vines by hand, steadfastly avoiding chemical treatments.

The winery, a modest cantina, is situated at the edge of Marco's house. It is equipped with concrete and fiberglass vats, old barrels, and little else, emphasizing a minimalist approach to winemaking. This simplicity in tools belies the complexity and appeal of his wines, among the most drinkable in Italy according to many enthusiasts. Marco's wines are renowned for their immediate drinkability and distinct character. However, with such limited production, enthusiasts often wish for more of Marco's exceptional creations.

Veneto, Italy

History

Located in north-eastern Italy, Veneto boasts a deep-rooted history that extends from its early days under the Roman Empire, transitioning through the influential Republic of Venice, and later becoming part of the Austrian Empire until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. This historical legacy positions Veneto as a significant region in Italy's cultural and viticultural narratives.

Terroir

Geographically smaller than some of Italy's renowned wine-producing regions like Piedmont and Tuscany, Veneto is, nonetheless, the country's top wine producer. Its terroir is varied, with distinct geographical zones each offering unique climatic and soil conditions. To the northwest, the alpine foothills border Lake Garda, while the eastern region hosts Valpolicella, renowned for its red wines. Further east lies Soave, Gambellara, and the Colli Euganei region near Padua, known for distinct white varietals. The region spans 90,000 hectares, with 35,400 hectares designated as DOC. Notably, the last two decades have seen an increasing interest in organic and natural wine practices in Veneto.

Wines

In Veneto, the spectrum of wines is broad, with a focus on both red and white varietals. Red wines prominently feature grapes such as Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, essential for producing the celebrated Amarone, Ripasso, and Recioto wines. On the white wine front, Garganega is the foundation of Soave, exhibiting characteristics of citrus and almond, while Glera, previously known as Prosecco, forms the base for the eponymous sparkling wine. Pinot Grigio and Trebbiano di Soave further diversify the white wine portfolio. The synergy between Veneto's wines and its regional cuisine, ranging from seafood delicacies of the Adriatic to traditional dishes like bigoli pasta, underscores the region's rich gastronomic heritage.

Terroir of Veneto

Geographically diverse, Veneto's terroir is an intricate combination of alpine foothills, flatlands, and coastal areas. This topographical diversity leads to a range of microclimates, each contributing distinct characteristics to the wines.

The soils predominantly consist of limestone, clay, and gravel, which are conducive to vine cultivation. Such a terroir, combined with the region's temperate climate, creates optimal conditions for producing wines that are both complex and expressive of their origins.

Wines of Veneto

Renowned for its extensive wine portfolio, Veneto is the producer of some of Italy's most recognized wines. Prosecco, a sparkling wine made primarily from the Glera grape, originates from this region and has witnessed international acclaim.

Valpolicella, another iconic wine from Veneto, is crafted mainly from the Corvina grape variety. It exhibits a spectrum of styles, from light and youthful to rich and aged expressions. Concurrently, the rise in organic and natural winemaking practices has enriched Veneto's wine offerings, adding depth to its alr
