Tasting notes

Scheurebe is one of Austria's most expressive white grapes, and here it anchors a wine that leans into stone fruit, grapefruit, and floral lift without ever feeling heavy. Zero sulfur, zero filtration, and a full year in neutral barrel gives it a texture that most white wines at this price point simply do not have.

Himmel auf Erden translates to "Heaven on Earth" and is Christian Tschida's entry-level white blend from his estate in Illmitz, on the eastern shores of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Austria. It is made from Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Scheurebe sourced from old vines planted in sandy gravel, schist, and limestone soils. Vines are farmed organically with biodynamic practices and have been in the Tschida family for four generations since the 19th century.

Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and foot-crushed. The juice ferments with indigenous yeast in large old neutral barrels with no racking, then ages for one year in 500 to 1500-liter barrels. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with zero sulfur added, a practice Tschida has maintained across his entire range since the 2015 vintage.

The result is an aromatic, textured white with stone fruit character and a stony mineral finish. Scheurebe contributes pronounced floral and grapefruit notes, while Weissburgunder adds body and weight. The combination of sandy soils, lake-moderated temperatures, and extended barrel rest gives the wine freshness alongside genuine depth.

Serve slightly cool at around 55F. The wine opens up nicely with 15 to 20 minutes in the glass.

A natural match for trout, grilled sea bass, or other freshwater and light ocean fish. Works well alongside pork schnitzel, roast chicken, or a plate of soft cheeses. The wine's bright acidity and stone fruit character hold up well against lightly spiced vegetable dishes and grain salads.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Christian Tschida

Christian Tschida is a fourth-generation winemaker based in Illmitz, Burgenland, Austria. He took over his father's winery in 2003 and has built a cult reputation in the natural wine world by applying obsessive attention to vineyard detail and near-zero intervention in the cellar. The Tschida family's vineyards have been cultivated since the 19th century, and Christian now manages approximately 14 hectares spread across plots around Illmitz and additional sites near Purbach on the western side of Lake Neusiedl.

Vineyards are farmed organically and with biodynamic practices. Soils at the Illmitz estate consist of sandy gravel, schist, and limestone, influenced by the lake's moderating microclimate. Tschida plants cover crops between rows to promote biodiversity and uses no synthetic chemicals in the vineyard or cellar. He employs a permanent harvest crew rather than interns, treating harvest as the most critical moment of the year.

In the cellar, Tschida's signature tool is a vertical basket press used with extremely light pressure, comparable to a handshake, yielding only the finest juice. Grapes are foot-crushed in closed-top tanks positioned outside in the shade before the juice moves to large neutral barrels for fermentation with indigenous yeast and extended aging. Since the 2015 vintage, all of his wines are made without any addition of sulfur. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland is Austria's easternmost federal state, bordered by Hungary to the east and shaped by the hot, continental Pannonian climate. The region produces Austria's most concentrated red wines as well as some of its finest sweet wines, but a new wave of natural producers around Lake Neusiedl has drawn international attention to the area's dry whites. Burgenland is divided into four DAC subregions: Neusiedlersee, Leithaberg, Mittelburgenland, and Eisenberg, each with distinct soils and grape profiles.

The Neusiedlersee DAC sits on the eastern and northern shores of Lake Neusiedl, a vast, shallow steppe lake covering 315 km2 that acts as a thermal reservoir, releasing stored warmth at night and moderating what would otherwise be an extreme continental climate. Soils across the region are highly varied, ranging from sandy and silty lakeside plots to gravel, schist, and limestone further from the shore. The town of Illmitz, where Tschida is based, sits in the southern Seewinkel sub-zone, known historically for botrytized sweet wines but increasingly for dry, terroir-driven whites and reds from low-intervention producers.
