Tasting notes

Sixty days of skin contact on Fiano grown at 800 meters pulls out a level of textural density and savory, umami depth that almost no other white grape can match at this elevation. The finish is long, mineral, and saline, with a tangerine peel bitterness that keeps you reaching for the glass.

Montemattina is 100% Fiano grown in the Contrada Tufiello of Calitri, in Alta Irpinia, at 750 to 800 meters above sea level. The vineyard sits on soils that are part tufaceous and part clayey, both rich in rocky skeleton. At this elevation, the growing season is long and cool for southern Italy, which drives acidity and aromatic precision in the grape.

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in open vats. Skin maceration runs for 60 days, giving the wine its amber-orange color, textural grip, and phenolic depth. After pressing, the wine ages for 12 months in stainless steel on fine lees, then continues in bottle without filtration. Sulfur additions are minimal, added only at bottling.

The 2015 Montemattina shows a bright golden-orange color with aromas of candied citrus, dried herbs, hay, and an umami, saline quality. On the palate it is dense and medium-bodied with polished tannins, notes of tangerine peel, juicy stone fruit, and a long, vibrant, mineral finish. The wine can prove reductive on opening and benefits from 20 to 30 minutes of air or brief decanting.

Classified as Campania IGT. The wine is the reserve-tier expression at Il Tufiello; Montemattina receives one additional year of aging compared to the estate's Sancho Panza bottling, adding complexity and length.

Built for umami-driven, savory foods: oysters, linguine alle vongole, grilled branzino, or peppered mussels. The wine's phenolic grip and salinity also hold up well against aged sheep's milk cheeses or mushroom-based dishes.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Tufiello

Il Tufiello is an estate in Calitri, in the Alta Irpinia area of the province of Avellino. The property was originally a cereal farm growing durum wheat, oats, and sunflowers, and was among the first operations in southern Italy to achieve organic certification, doing so in 1990 under Michele Zampaglione. Wine production began in 2004 with a single hectare of Fiano vines. The estate now farms 3.5 hectares of Fiano divided across three separate vineyard parcels, with planting density of approximately 6,000 vines per hectare.

The vineyards are situated at 750 to 800 meters above sea level in the Contrada Tufiello. Soils consist of two distinct types: tufaceous and clayey, both with significant rock content. The estate is certified organic and uses only copper and sulfur in the vineyard. No synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides are used. Guido Zampaglione manages the property alongside his wife Igiea and his father Michele, while also overseeing Tenuta Grillo in Monferrato, Piedmont.

In the cellar, Guido works exclusively with native yeasts, no temperature control, and long skin macerations of 60 days for both the Sancho Panza and Montemattina bottlings. Montemattina is differentiated from Sancho Panza by an additional year of aging on the fine lees in stainless steel before bottling. The wine is not filtered and receives only minimal sulfur additions at bottling. The Zampaglione family has cited the influence of La Stoppa, the cult Emilia-Romagna producer, on their approach to extended maceration and natural winemaking.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Campania is a southern Italian region that spans coastal zones near Naples and Mount Vesuvius inland to the high Apennine valleys of Irpinia. The inland subzone of Alta Irpinia, in the province of Avellino, sits at elevations ranging from 700 to over 800 meters, producing conditions that are markedly cooler and longer-seasoned than the Campanian coast. Soils vary from volcanic and tufaceous in some parcels to clay-calcareous in others.

Campania holds four DOCGs: Taurasi and Aglianico del Taburno for reds, and Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo for whites. Irpinia DOC, granted in 2005, covers a broad range of varietal wines from the Avellino province. Il Tufiello's wines fall under the broader Campania IGT designation, which allows greater flexibility in winemaking. Fiano, one of Campania's most historically significant white grapes, has been cultivated in the region for over 2,000 years and is known for its capacity to age and develop complexity over time.
