Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Sommariva

Sommariva Società Agricola Palazzo Rosso is a family estate on the hillsides of Conegliano, in the Treviso province of the Veneto, run by Cinzia Sommariva. The estate name references the russet color of the iron-rich soils on the property: palazzo rosso translates as "red building" or "red estate," a nod to the distinctive warm hue of the hillside terrain.

For generations the Sommariva family farmed vines on the flatlands of the Veneto, growing a mixture of local and French varieties and selling the fruit or bulk wine, as was the norm for most small growers in the region. The shift came when Cinzia's father, Caterino Sommariva, took a different view of the hillsides above Conegliano. In the 1970s, he and his wife Urbana began buying steep parcels on those slopes, convinced that the combination of altitude, drainage, and southern exposure gave the land a genuine advantage over the flat valley floor. They also bet early on Glera, the grape behind Prosecco, planting it across their new hillside holdings at a time before the appellation carried the international recognition it has since earned.

Cinzia grew up watching her parents work through harvests on those difficult steep sites and initially went to study marketing rather than winemaking. But she came back, first as a business partner to her parents, and eventually as the driving force behind the estate. She runs the winery today with the same close attention to every stage of production that her parents insisted on.

The Il Rosa spumante was developed as a distinctly non-Prosecco sparkling wine from the same hillsides, built on Raboso, a variety her parents had always grown alongside the Glera. Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, the Berkeley-based importer who has carried Sommariva wines for many years, describes it as deserving a permanent space in the fridge, which is about as direct an endorsement as that house gives.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Conegliano is a small city in the Treviso province of the Veneto, roughly an hour north of Venice, set at the foot of a ridge of steep forested hills that mark the beginning of the pre-Alpine landscape. It sits at the eastern end of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG zone, one of the most recognized sparkling wine appellations in Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. The town itself is historically significant in Italian viticulture: it is home to Italy's first school of enology, founded in 1876, and the birthplace of Giambattista Cima, the Renaissance painter, whose image appears on the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco label.

The hills around Conegliano are steep, typically ranging between 300 and 1,300 ft above sea level, with south and southwest-facing exposures that maximize sunlight during the growing season. The landscape is broken by a patchwork of small vineyards on terraced slopes, woodland, villages, and the occasional valley floor plantation. Soils are heterogeneous: a mix of clay, limestone, sandstone, and morainic material, with the steeper hillside parcels tending toward thin, well-draining soils over rocky subsoil. These conditions, combined with the elevation and the ventilation that comes from the Dolomites to the north, produce grapes with firm natural acidity and concentrated aromatics even in warm years.

The Sommariva estate's vineyards sit just outside the formal Prosecco Superiore DOCG boundaries in the Conegliano hills, on terrain that shares the same slope, aspect, and soil character as the DOCG parcels, but is planted with Raboso and Pinot Nero rather than Glera. Raboso is an indigenous Veneto variety with very high natural acidity and deep color, making it well suited to the tart, fruit-forward sparkling rosato style. It is rarely seen in international markets, which makes the Sommariva Il Rosa one of the more distinctive uses of the variety outside of its home region of Treviso and Piave.
