Tasting notes

Vivid pale ruby-pink with a lively, persistent natural foam and a slight haze from the lees. The nose is fresh and fragrant, with wild strawberry, ripe cherry, watermelon, and carnation. On the palate, dry and lively, with bright acidity, soft tannins, red fruit, and a clean mineral finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, light-bodied naturally sparkling rosé; the four-hour skin maceration on Lambrusco Grasparossa extracts enough color for a vivid pink-ruby hue and a light tannic presence without pushing the wine toward a full red; the ancestral method produces a gentle, persistent effervescence
  • Grapes & terroir: Lambrusco Grasparossa, the most structured and darkly colored of the Lambrusco subvarieties, named for its characteristic red stems at ripeness; organically and biodynamically farmed at 820 ft elevation on sandy clay and limestone soils in Castellarano, hand-harvested; no synthetic inputs
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; four hours skin maceration to extract color and light tannin; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; ancestral method — bottled during active fermentation; natural in-bottle re-fermentation; unfined, unfiltered; minimal sulfite additions
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve well chilled at 46–50°F; no decanting
  • Pairing: Gnocco fritto con prosciutto di Modena (traditional Emilian fried dough with cured ham)
  • Similar to: Lambrusco di Sorbara Rosato from Paltrinieri, ancestral-method Frappato Rosato from Sicily, Col Fondo Lambrusco from Emilia-Romagna

Il Farneto Frisant Lambrusco Rosato 2022 is a naturally sparkling dry rosé made from Lambrusco Grasparossa grown organically and biodynamically on Azienda Agricola Il Farneto's estate in Castellarano, Province of Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna. The vineyards sit at approximately 820 feet elevation on sandy-clay soils with limestone between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa. Four hours of skin maceration draws color and light structure before spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Il Farneto Frisant Lambrusco Rosato 2022 uses the ancestral method, with natural bottle re-fermentation creating the effervescence. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfites. 12% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Farneto

Azienda Agricola Il Farneto was founded in the mid-1990s by Marco Bertoni in Castellarano, Province of Reggio Emilia, with a straightforward purpose: to produce natural wines while demonstrating that sustainable, environmentally respectful agriculture was viable and worthwhile in a region where industrial viticulture had dominated for decades. The estate covers 34 hectares in total, 8 of which are planted to vineyards, with the remainder consisting of woodland, fossiliferous gullies, and the naturally biodiverse terrain that characterizes this corner of the Scandiano-Canossa hills.

All vineyard work is carried out by hand. The estate has held biodynamic certification since its early years and applies biodynamic principles throughout the growing season: preparations derived from plant and mineral materials, work timed to the lunar calendar, and a commitment to building long-term soil vitality rather than managing short-term yield. Vines are planted at 4,000 per hectare — a density that encourages deep rooting and natural competition — on sandy clay soils with limestone at 820 feet elevation. The vines average 15 to 20 years of age and include a range of indigenous Emilia-Romagna varieties: Lambrusco Grasparossa, Spergola, Marzemino, Malbo Gentile, Malvasia, and Trebbiano Modenese, among others.

Winemaker Flavio Restani oversees cellar operations with the same minimal-intervention philosophy that Marco Bertoni established for the vineyards. All fermentations are spontaneous; no commercial yeasts are added. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only small sulfite additions where judged strictly necessary. The wines are named in reference to the local Rio Rocca river, whose distinctive geological character and natural surroundings shaped the identity of the estate from the start.

The Frisant Lambrusco Rosato 2022 is part of a range that also includes the Frisant Bianco (Spergola), Frisant Rosso (Lambrusco Grasparossa), and the Giandon orange and red wines.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Lambrusco Grasparossa is the most firmly structured and deeply colored of the Lambrusco varieties, grown primarily in the hills and foothills south of Modena, centered on the commune of Castelvetro di Modena in the DOC Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro. Its name — graspa rossa, meaning "red stalk" — refers to the distinctive way the vine's stems turn a vivid red at harvest. It is a grape of the hillside rather than the plain, producing darker, more tannic, and more mineral wine than the Sorbara or Salamino subvarieties grown on lower-lying alluvial soils.

The Castellarano estate of Il Farneto sits at the meeting point of the Modena and Reggio Emilia provinces, between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa at around 820 feet elevation — high enough to benefit from meaningful diurnal temperature variation, which preserves natural acidity in the grapes and keeps alcohol in check even in warm vintages. The sandy clay and limestone soils at this elevation are well-drained and mineral-rich, giving Lambrusco Grasparossa grown here a flinty, stony backbone that distinguishes it from versions produced on the heavier, deeper clay soils of the plain.

Emilia-Romagna's relationship with Lambrusco is ancient — archaeological evidence of sparkling red wine production here goes back to Roman times — and the region's traditional practice of re-fermenting wine in bottle (the ancestral method) predates Champagne's méthode traditionnelle. The industrialization of the twentieth century largely replaced this tradition with pressurized autoclave production (Charmat method) for mass-market Lambrusco, but a growing number of producers in the Modena and Reggio Emilia hills have returned to the ancestral method as a way of producing wines with genuine character and connection to the territory. Il Farneto is one of those producers, using bottle re-fermentation on biodynamically farmed Lambrusco Grasparossa to make sparkling wines that reflect the specific hillside terroir of Castellarano.
