Czech Republic Wine

The Czech Republic's natural wine scene is concentrated in Moravia, the southern region that produces close to 95 percent of Czech wine, with a smaller contribution from Bohemia. Moravian growers work with a mix of indigenous varieties, including Welschriesling, Muller-Thurgau, and Gruner Veltliner, alongside international grapes, making wines of a distinctly Central European character: high in acidity, mineral, and food-oriented. The movement here is young but serious, and many producers farm organically or biodynamically.

Moravia sits on the same latitude as parts of Austria and Germany, and its wines share that cool-climate signature: bright acidity, low to moderate alcohol, and a savory, mineral edge. The best-known whites come from Welschriesling, Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, and the aromatic local crossing Palava, while Moravia also does a fine line in skin-contact whites that connect it to the broader Central European orange-wine tradition. Reds tend to be lighter, built on Frankovka, the local name for Blaufrankisch, and Svatovavrinecke, known elsewhere as St. Laurent.

The natural scene is small and tight-knit, with a cluster of growers around the villages of the Palava hills and the Slovacko district. Many farm organically or biodynamically, ferment with native yeasts, and bottle with little added sulfur, and the wines are made in tiny quantities that rarely leave the country. That scarcity is part of the appeal for anyone who likes to drink off the beaten path.

These are food wines above all: high acidity and moderate weight make them natural partners for pork, dumplings, roast poultry, and fresh cheese. Serve the whites well chilled and the lighter reds with a slight chill. For more from the region, see our Austrian and orange wine collections.

Almost all Czech wine comes from Moravia in the south, which shares a cool-climate signature with neighboring Austria: bright acidity, moderate alcohol, and a savory, mineral character. It is best known for aromatic whites and, increasingly, for skin-contact whites and light reds from a young natural wine scene.

The main whites are Welschriesling, Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, Muller-Thurgau, and the local aromatic crossing Palava. Reds are lighter and built on Frankovka (Blaufrankisch) and Svatovavrinecke (St. Laurent).

Many of the growers we carry farm organically or biodynamically, ferment with native yeasts, and bottle with little added sulfur. The natural scene here is small and quality-focused, with wines often made in tiny quantities.

Yes. Moravian growers have a real affinity for skin-contact whites, which connects the region to the broader Central European orange-wine tradition it shares with Austria, Slovenia, and northern Italy.

These are food wines through and through. Their high acidity and moderate weight suit pork, dumplings, roast poultry, and fresh cheese. Serve the whites well chilled and the lighter reds with a slight chill.
