Tasting notes

This is Grenache stripped of weight and jam: the Lilies and Tullah parcels in deep white sand produce a pale, perfumed wine with raspberry, rose petal, and a savoury mineral finish from the ironstone soils at Wood vineyard in Clarendon. The natural spritz and snappy acidity make it drink more like a Beaujolais cru than anything most people expect from South Australia.

  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied red; pale ruby; raspberry, rose petal, baking spice, ironstone earth; 13% ABV; crown seal
  • Grapes & Terroir: 100% Grenache; organically farmed; three vineyards: Lilies and Tullah (McLaren Flat, deep white sand over clay, 80+ y.o. vines) and Wood (Clarendon, sandy ironstone ridge)
  • Winemaking: Native yeast fermentation; destemmed; fermented to dry on skins; aged in stainless steel; no additions, no fining, no filtration
  • Serving: Serve at 58-62F; no decant needed; slight natural spritz is normal
  • Pairing: Roast lamb, grilled merguez, herb pork, aged hard cheese, moderately spiced lentils
  • Similar To: For fans of light-bodied Pinot Noir, Beaujolais cru, or Jura Poulsard who want transparency and terroir from warm-climate Grenache

Like Raindrops is a blend of Grenache from three organically farmed vineyards across McLaren Vale and Clarendon: Lilies and Tullah in McLaren Flat, where 80-plus-year-old bush vines grow in deep white sand over clay, and the Wood vineyard on the sandy ironstone ridge of Clarendon. Each parcel is handled separately before blending.

In the winery, James Erskine destemmed the fruit and fermented it to dry on skins using only native yeasts, then pressed to stainless steel with no additions, no fining, and no filtration. The result is sealed under crown seal. A faint natural spritz is common in the glass and lifts the aromatics.

The wine is light to medium in body with vivid acidity. Expect fresh raspberry, rose petal, baking spice, and an earthy, mineral undercurrent drawn from the ironstone and clay soils. Tannins are soft and the finish is long and savoury.

Jauma's vineyards are managed organically and assessed annually by NASAA. This is a zero-addition wine: no sulfur, no yeasts, no acids, no fining agents.

Serve lightly chilled at around 58-62F. The wine's bright acidity and soft tannins work well with roast lamb, herb-crusted pork, grilled merguez, and aged hard cheeses. It also holds its own against moderately spiced dishes like lamb tagine or Indian-spiced lentils.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jauma

James Erskine founded Jauma in 2010 after a career as one of Australia's most decorated sommeliers, including being named Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year, topping the Court of Master Sommelier exams in Melbourne in 2008, and completing an Honours degree in Agricultural Science (Oenology) as well as studies at UC Davis. The name Jauma (pronounced 'yow-ma') is the Catalan word for James — Erskine took it after meeting a Spanish winemaker producing light, transparent Grenache in Spain, an approach that directly shaped the Jauma style.

Erskine was a founding member of Natural Selection Theory, a collective formed around 2010 with South Australian natural winemakers Tom Shobbrook and Anton van Klopper, which played a formative role in establishing Australia's natural wine culture. Since 2011, viticulturist Fiona Wood has managed the McLaren Vale vineyards Jauma sources from, applying strict organic practices. Erskine later purchased a 40-acre farm in Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, which has been certified organic since 2009, and now serves as the Jauma Farm winery and cellar door.

All Jauma wines are made from organically grown grapes with zero additions or subtractions during winemaking — no sulfur, no commercial yeasts, no acids, no fining agents, no filtration. Fermentations are driven by native yeasts. The vineyards are assessed annually by NASAA for organic certification. All wines are sealed under crown seal. Erskine has not used sulfur additions since at least 2015 across the full range, and the winery's stated philosophy is to produce wines purely from grapes, nothing more.

Wine region

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale is a Geographical Indication (GI) declared in 1997, located about 38 kilometres south of Adelaide in South Australia, bounded by the Mt Lofty Ranges to the east and south and the Gulf of St Vincent to the west. The region covers 433 square kilometres with over 7,400 hectares of vineyards. Its Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers with winter-dominant rainfall and low humidity — makes it one of the most certified-organic-friendly regions in Australia. Cooling afternoon sea breezes from the Gulf of St Vincent and cold air descending from the Mt Lofty Ranges moderate daytime heat and help preserve natural acidity in the grapes.

McLaren Vale has over 40 distinct soil types, ranging from deep white and grey sands to red-brown loams, clay subsoils, ironstone, schist, and alluvial deposits — some geological formations dating back 500 million years. The region has no officially enshrined sub-appellations, though producers and the McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism Association identify up to 19 distinct districts. Shiraz accounts for roughly half the total crush, but Grenache — much of it dry-grown old-vine bush vine material planted in the 1940s and earlier — is the grape that defines the region's most exciting natural and minimal-intervention wines. Sub-areas like McLaren Flat, Blewitt Springs, and Clarendon each bring distinct soil profiles and elevations to the glass.
