Tasting notes

Disco Special punches well above its price by delivering the kind of bright, crunchy blue and black fruit you rarely get from McLaren Vale — no heat, no syrup, just tart plum and black olive with a salty, peppery edge. The short maceration and zero additions keep the wine alive and genuinely refreshing, especially with a light chill.

Disco Special is a 70% Shiraz, 30% Grenache blend sourced from organically farmed vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia. The grapes come from sites managed by viticulturist Fiona Wood, who has worked exclusively with Jauma since 2011. Vines at several of these blocks date to the 1940s and are dry-grown on the region's diverse mix of red-brown sandy loams, sandy soils, and clay subsoils.

Winemaker James Erskine ferments with native yeasts and uses a short maceration before pressing. The wine goes to tank and is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfur — consistent with Erskine's practice since 2015. Bottles are sealed under crown cap.

The result is a lighter-framed, high-acid red that avoids the dense, extracted style McLaren Vale is often associated with. Expect tart black plum, crunchy blueberry, black olive, and a peppery lift from the Shiraz. Serve slightly chilled — around 55-60F — for best results.

Works well with grilled lamb chops, merguez sausages, or a charcuterie board with cured meats and aged cheddar. The bright acidity and low tannin also make it a good match for charred vegetables, burgers, or anything off the grill. Serve with a light chill.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jauma

James Erskine launched Jauma in 2010 after a career as one of Australia's most decorated sommeliers — his accolades include Australian Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year (2008) and a Len Evans scholarship. He holds an honors degree in Agricultural Science from the University of Adelaide and UC Davis, specializing in soil chemistry. The name Jauma (pronounced 'yow-mah') is Catalan for James, taken from a Grenache producer Erskine met while traveling in Spain. His first wines came from McLaren Vale Grenache fruit and were part of an early collaboration with the Natural Selection Theory, a group that also included Anton von Klopper and Tom Shobbrook.

Erskine has not used sulfur in any of his wines since 2015. Fruit for the McLaren Vale range is sourced from organically managed vineyards — including sites in Blewitt Springs, Seaview, and Clarendon — overseen by viticulturist Fiona Wood, who has worked with Jauma since 2011. Some vineyard blocks hold vines dating to the 1940s. The farming approach includes applications of aerated compost tea informed by the Soil Food Web Institute methodology, co-cropping, and no-till practices.

All wines are produced at the Jauma Farm winery in Lenswood, Adelaide Hills — a 40-acre property purchased in 2018 that has been certified organic since 2009. Inside the winery, no additions of any kind are made: no yeasts, acids, enzymes, tannins, polymers, fining agents, or sulfur. Wines are fermented with native yeasts, pressed to stainless tank, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. All bottles are sealed under crown cap.

Wine region

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale sits roughly 45 minutes south of Adelaide, bordered by the Gulf St. Vincent to the west and the southern Mount Lofty Ranges to the east and south. The region covers 433 square kilometers with vineyards ranging in elevation from about 50 to 350 meters. Its Mediterranean climate brings warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with cooling afternoon breezes off the Gulf of St. Vincent moderating daytime heat. The combination of warmth and low humidity makes it the region with the highest concentration of certified organic vineyards in Australia.

McLaren Vale has over 40 distinct soil types — red-brown sandy loams, grey-brown loamy sands, sandy soils, terra rossa, and dark cracking clays — contributing to considerable variation in wine style across a relatively compact area. The region remains phylloxera-free. Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon are the dominant red varieties, with sub-areas such as Blewitt Springs, Seaview, McLaren Flat, and Clarendon informally recognized by producers as distinct growing zones, though none are formally enshrined as separate GIs.
