Thierry Hesnault

Thierry Hesnault operates from a cave cut into tuffeau rock near Chahaignes in the Sarthe, a quiet corner of the Loire that most wine drinkers have never heard of. There is no electricity, no running water. Fermentations proceed slowly at the cave's naturally cool temperature, and everything moves by gravity. These are conditions that demand patience, attention, and a deep trust in the material. Thierry has spent his entire career building toward exactly this.

The Winemaker

He grew up near Amboise in a winemaking family, traveled widely to work harvests in Bordeaux, Champagne, Vouvray, and further afield, then returned to the Loire to work closely with Jean-Pierre Robinot and Eric Nicolas, two central figures in the region's natural wine scene. He taught at the Lycee Viticole in Amboise while simultaneously spending years identifying and acquiring parcels of the oldest, most interesting vines in the area. His first vintage under his own label came in 2009.

The Vineyards

Thierry works 2.68 hectares of old vines scattered across tiny parcels in Chahaignes and the Touraine near Amboise. The fragmentary nature of his holdings reflects the unhurried accumulation of genuinely exceptional material: vines he specifically sought out, not inherited or bought in bulk. Pineau d'Aunis is central to the portfolio, alongside various local varieties suited to the tuffeau soils.

The Wines

All wines are aged in old oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered, and released without any added sulfur. Quantities are genuinely tiny. A Part, Sanguin, and the Petillant Naturel available through Primal Wine represent a producer who keeps a deliberately low profile but commands deep loyalty from a small group of importers and buyers who know what they have found. These are wines of real purity and place.
