Clovis is the work of Remi Pouizin, a vigneron who grew up steeped in organic farming and now represents a new generation of biodynamic winemaking in the Southern Rhone. From a restored 19th-century chateau in Visan, he makes gentle, transparent wines that sidestep the region's heavyweight reputation.
Backstory
Pouizin built his career at his family's Domaine La Fourmente, which he ran organically from 2000. After leaving in 2014 he established his own project around the village of Visan. The Clovis label is a partnership between Pouizin and importer T Edward Wines, pairing his estate fruit with a curated selection of nearby organic growers.
The Region
The wines come from Visan, in the northern part of the Southern Rhone Valley. The fruit for the Cotes du Rhone is drawn from Pouizin's estate and from organic producers within about a ten-kilometer radius.
Vineyards and Farming
Pouizin works around 25 hectares of vineyards that are certified organic or biodynamic, or in conversion. Classic Southern Rhone varieties lead the way, including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier.
Winemaking
The cellar runs on minimal intervention. Fermentations use only indigenous yeasts, extraction is gentle, and the wines avoid oak in favor of concrete and stainless steel, keeping the focus on fruit and terroir.
The Wines
The core of the project is an accessible, honest Cotes du Rhone that reflects the lighter, more aromatic side of the appellation rather than the heavily extracted norm.
