Casè

Casè - natural wine producer profile | Primal Wine illustration

In the hills of the Val Trebbia above Piacenza, Casè is the work of a grower who staked an unlikely bet on Pinot Nero and turned it into a calling.

Backstory

Casè was founded in 1998 by Alberto Anguissola, who planted the first vineyards between 1998 and 2000 after careful study of the soil and climate. He began making wine part-time at a neighboring estate around 2000, then in 2012 left to dedicate himself fully to his own natural wines, working alongside Diego Ragazzi.

The Region

The estate lies near Travo, in the Val Trebbia in the hills of Piacenza, in Emilia-Romagna, with views toward the Apennines. Vineyards sit at around 600 meters of altitude on soils of limestone and clay.

Vineyards and Farming

Casè farms organically, keeping a healthy ecosystem by avoiding chemical herbicides and industrial fertilizers and using only minimal sulfur and copper. The focus is Pinot Nero, with Barbera, Bonarda, Ortrugo, Malvasia, Moscato and Marsanne also grown.

Winemaking

The wines are made naturally, with low intervention in the cellar and minimal additions, in keeping with the estate's organic and natural approach.

The Wines

The range spans red, white, rose and sparkling wines, with Pinot Nero bottlings such as Riva del Ciliegio at its heart, expressing this high, cool corner of the Val Trebbia.
