Tasting notes

The dual-method Pinot Gris fermentation — part open-top skin contact, part carbonic maceration — builds texture and a faint cherry-candy lift without heavy tannin. The direct-pressed, barrel-fermented Riesling keeps the acidity sharp and the whole thing feeling more like a chilled skin-contact white than a heavy orange wine.

Where Ya PJ's At? is a skin-contact wine from the Willamette Valley, Oregon, blending 80% Pinot Gris and 20% Riesling sourced from multiple sites including No Clos Radio, Beckenridge Vineyard, Logsdon Ridge Vineyard, and Oracle Vineyard. The Beckenridge fruit comes from own-rooted, dry-farmed vines planted in 1976. The No Clos Radio estate vineyard sits on the eastern edge of the Oregon Coast Range just northwest of Forest Grove, with Jory and Loess soils containing pisolitic deposits of iron and manganese.

For the 2020 vintage, the majority of the No Clos Radio Pinot Gris was fermented in open-top fermenters on the skins with daily punch-downs until dry, a process lasting approximately 20 days. Around 15% of that Pinot Gris was fermented carbonically in sealed containers for the same duration. The two lots were pressed together and moved into neutral oak. The Riesling was direct-pressed and fermented separately in neutral oak barrels. Once dry, everything was blended and the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with a small sulfur addition at bottling.

The wine sits in orange wine territory by method, but its light extraction and high natural acidity from the Riesling component give it a tone closer to a structured, textured rosé. Aromas lean toward soft herbs, cherry candy, violet, and a citrus-mineral edge, with a palate of cranberry, strawberry, and fresh citrus carried by firm acidity and light tannin from the skin contact.

Works well with white pizza, smoked salmon, fresh goat cheese, and prosciutto. The wine's acidity and light tannin can handle a stinky soft cheese or a bowl of buttered popcorn without being overwhelmed. Try it lightly chilled alongside bibimbap or a mushroom tart.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Maloof Wines

Maloof Wines was founded in 2015 by Ross Maloof and Bee Maloof, who began as négociants sourcing fruit from across the Willamette Valley. Ross spent over a decade in the Philadelphia restaurant industry in beverage-focused roles at establishments including Vedge Restaurant Group before a harvest visit to Oregon changed his direction entirely. Bee spent close to a decade as a materials science engineer in the aerospace industry before applying that analytical approach to winemaking during the 2016 harvest. After that vintage, both returned briefly to Philadelphia before relocating permanently to Oregon in 2017.

In late 2019, the Maloofs took over one of the oldest commercial vineyard sites in the northern Willamette Valley, originally planted in the early 1970s by Harvey Shafer. They renamed it No Clos Radio and it now serves as both their estate vineyard and winery, located just outside Forest Grove on the eastern edge of the Oregon Coast Range. The site is shared with friends Jim Fischer and Jenny Mosbacher of Fossil and Fawn. The farming program converted to organic practices in 2020, with official CCOF certification achieved for the 2022 vintage.

Maloof's winemaking approach for the Where Ya PJ's At? bottling centers on skin-contact Pinot Gris fermented in open-top vessels with a portion handled via carbonic maceration, producing two distinct lots that are pressed and blended before aging in neutral oak. The Riesling is direct-pressed and barrel-fermented separately in neutral oak, then blended in once dry. The finished wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with a minimal sulfur addition.

Wine region

Willamette Valley, United States

The Willamette Valley stretches roughly 150 miles north to south in northwestern Oregon, flanked by the Coast Range to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east. The Coast Range blocks cold Pacific storms while the Cascades shield the valley from arid eastern air, producing a long, temperate growing season with warm days, cool nights, and mild autumns. The valley now encompasses eleven nested sub-AVAs, each reflecting distinct soils, elevations, and microclimates shaped by volcanic activity, marine sedimentation, and the Missoula Floods.

The Tualatin Hills AVA, established in June 2020, sits in the northwesternmost corner of the Willamette Valley and holds the largest concentration of Laurelwood soil in Oregon — a windblown volcanic loess over basalt deposited during the Missoula Floods roughly 12,000 years ago. Elevations range from 200 to 1,000 feet. The AVA benefits from a partial rain shadow cast by the Coast Range, resulting in slightly lower rainfall and drier conditions during fall harvest compared to neighboring appellations. Vineyards in this zone are well-suited to aromatic white varieties including Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer, which retain strong natural acidity in the cool, well-drained conditions.
