Tasting notes

This is Sangiovese at its most site-specific: more than 30 days on skins followed by two years in 500-liter casks produces a wine with dried cherry, volcanic mineral grip, and earthy depth that no conventional Chianti can replicate. The Vigna le Coste parcel sits at the highest elevation on the estate, giving the wine a lifted, almost austere quality that rewards patience.

Vigna le Coste is a single-vineyard red from the highest parcel of the Le Coste estate in Gradoli, northern Lazio. The grape is Greghetto Rosso, the local name for Sangiovese, grown on volcanic soils rich in iron and minerals at roughly 400 to 600 meters elevation above Lake Bolsena. The 2012 vintage was estate-farmed and bottled in Gradoli using certified organic and biodynamic practices.

In the cellar, grapes were fermented in vats with partial whole-bunch inclusion and left on skins for over a month using only indigenous yeasts. The wine then aged in 500-liter neutral oak casks for two years. It was bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites.

The result is a wine shaped by extended maceration and volcanic terroir rather than extracted fruit weight. Expect savory, iron-tinged red fruit, firm but integrated tannins from the long skin contact, and the kind of structural depth that comes from two years in cask. At over a decade old, this 2012 has had time to knit together.

Serve with slow-braised lamb, porchetta, or aged pecorino. The wine's firm tannins and savory character also work well with lentil stews, wild boar ragu, or grilled mushrooms with herbs. Avoid very delicate dishes; this wine needs food with some weight.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste di Gradoli was founded in 2004 by Gianmarco Antonuzzi, a Gradoli native, and Clémentine Bouveron, whom he met in Alsace while she was studying viticulture and oenology. Before establishing the estate, Antonuzzi worked with Bruno Schueller in Alsace, Didier Barral in Languedoc, Jean-Paul Thévenet in Beaujolais, and Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy. The couple identified an abandoned vineyard and farmland in Gradoli and began with approximately three hectares, expanding to around 14 hectares total, including vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, and oak forest.

The estate is certified organic and farmed according to biodynamic principles. Vineyards are planted at densities of up to 10,000 vines per hectare and include a mix of massale selections and ungrafted vines. Varieties grown include Greghetto Rosso, Aleatico, Procanico, Roscetto, Malvasia, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, Colorino, and Verdello. All vineyard work is done by hand. The terroir is defined by volcanic soils rich in iron and minerals at approximately 400 to 600 meters elevation, with the microclimate of Lake Bolsena providing cooling influence.

Winemaking at Le Coste follows a strict low-intervention philosophy. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Wines are unfined, unfiltered, and produced without added sulfites. Aging takes place in a historic cellar in the center of Gradoli, using vessels that include 500-liter neutral oak casks. Antonuzzi manages cellar operations while Bouveron leads vineyard work, though both roles overlap considerably. The estate releases a wide range of wines each vintage, each from specific parcels or variety combinations.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lazio, known in Latin as Latium, is a central Italian region historically dominated by white wine production from Malvasia and Trebbiano grapes, particularly around the Castelli Romani south of Rome. The northern section of Lazio, called Alta Tuscia or the Viterbo province, is geologically distinct: the landscape around Lake Bolsena sits on ancient volcanic formations, with soils rich in iron and minerals. Lake Bolsena, Europe's largest volcanic lake, creates a temperate microclimate that moderates summer heat and extends the growing season at elevations between 400 and 600 meters.

The main DOC in the Gradoli area is Aleatico di Gradoli, established in 1972 and covering the sweet red wine made from the aromatic Aleatico grape around the lake's shores. Beyond that specific appellation, Lazio hosts more than 200 indigenous grape varieties and a growing number of producers working outside formal DOC structures. Cesanese del Piglio is the region's only DOCG. Key indigenous reds include Cesanese, Aleatico, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, and Greghetto Rosso (locally synonymous with Sangiovese). Le Coste operates without a DOC designation, labeling wines as IGT or table wine.
