Tasting notes

This is Nero d'Avola at its most transparent: no oak, short maceration, spontaneous fermentation, and a vineyard so small that every bottle carries real place in it. The clay-limestone of Contrada Buonivini pushes through as a saline mineral note beneath the dark cherry fruit, and the Pignatello adds a subtle herbal lift that keeps the wine lively.

Turi is the Sicilian nickname for Salvatore, and it is the name Salvatore Marino gives to his only red wine: a 90/10 field blend of Nero d'Avola and Pignatello grown on a 2-hectare plot in Contrada Buonivini, near Pachino, in southeastern Sicily. The vineyard sits on clay-limestone soils laden with marine fossils, positioned between the Ionian and Mediterranean seas, within the DOC Eloro Pachino subzone. Vines are bush-trained (alberello) and between 16 and 35 years old.

Marino works entirely by hand, using the lunar calendar to time all vineyard tasks. The only inputs are seasoned organic manure and green manure cover crops. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with approximately six days of maceration. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, the wine is racked off its gross lees, and it is bottled in the spring following harvest. Total sulfites are very low, and the wine is unfined.

In the glass, Turi Nero d'Avola shows a ruby red color with notes of black cherry, plum, violet, and dried Mediterranean herbs. Tannins are integrated rather than grippy, and acidity keeps the wine fresh despite the warm coastal growing conditions. It is a wine built for the table, not the cellar.

Pair with grilled lamb chops, pork sausage with fennel, or a slow-roasted tomato and eggplant caponata. The wine's acidity and moderate tannin also make it a good match for aged pecorino or caciocavallo. It can handle a little char on the meat without the tannin becoming harsh.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Agricola Marino

Salvatore Marino launched his farm project in 2017 in Pachino, though his family has been connected to viticulture in this part of Sicily for five generations. The winery and vineyards are located in Contrada Buonivini, a named growing area near Pachino historically associated with quality Nero d'Avola, not far from the Vendicari nature reserve on the Ionian coast.

Marino farms 2 hectares of bush-trained (alberello) vines between 16 and 35 years old. All vineyard work is done by hand, guided by the lunar calendar. The only fertilizers used are seasoned organic manure and green manure cover crops. No synthetic inputs enter the vineyard. Marino has described the hoe and pruning shears as the tools he uses most.

In the cellar, Marino intervenes as little as possible. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted, then destemmed and macerated for approximately six days in stainless steel. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally. The wine is racked off its gross lees and bottled the spring following harvest. It is unfined, lightly filtered, and carries very low total sulfites.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

The Eloro DOC covers the extreme southeastern corner of Sicily, spanning the municipalities of Pachino, Noto, Portopalo di Capo Passero, and Rosolini in the province of Siracusa, plus Ispica in Ragusa. The appellation sits at 36 degrees north latitude, making it Sicily's most southerly DOC. The land is mostly low-lying coastal plain with the Mediterranean to the south and east moderating what would otherwise be extreme summer heat. Soils in the Pachino subzone are primarily clay and limestone, frequently embedded with marine fossils, and they provide good drainage and mineral complexity.

The Eloro Pachino subzone, which covers Pachino and Noto, received DOC status in 1994. Its wines are built primarily from Nero d'Avola, which must compose 90 to 100 percent of the blend, with Frappato and Pignatello permitted up to 10 percent. These three are the only red varieties authorized within the DOC. The Pachino area has grown Nero d'Avola for centuries, and the variety performs differently here than anywhere else on the island: the coastal limestone tempers its natural weight, producing wines with more freshness and definition than the grape typically shows in hotter inland sites.
