Tasting notes

The fillets are packed in genuine extra virgin olive oil from Casa de São Miguel rather than a generic brine or sunflower oil, which keeps the fish moist and adds a grassy, slightly peppery backdrop to the clean, meaty albacore. The hand-selection process and steam pre-cooking before canning gives the fillets a noticeably firm, flake-intact texture that holds up whether eaten straight from the tin or folded into a salad.

Luças (Luças & C.ª, Lda.) has been producing conservas in Matosinhos, Portugal since 1896 and remains family-run. Matosinhos sits adjacent to the Port of Leixões, one of Portugal's largest seaports and historically the country's leading sardine fishing port in northern Europe. The cannery selects white tuna fillets by hand, one by one, then packs them in extra virgin olive oil sourced from Casa de São Miguel, a Portuguese producer. Each can contains white tuna (70%), extra virgin olive oil (29%), and salt — no additives, no preservatives.

The tuna used is white tuna (Thunnus alalunga, albacore), the only species whose canned meat is legally labeled white meat. Albacore has a firm texture, large moist flakes, and the highest omega-3 fatty acid content of any commercially canned tuna species. The fish is pre-cooked and steamed before canning, following the traditional Portuguese method Luças has used for over a century. Net weight is 120g (4.2 oz) per can.

Portuguese conservas producers have long recognized that high-quality tuna packed in good olive oil continues to mellow and integrate in the can over time. Luças has won multiple awards in Portugal for its conservas line, which spans sardines, mackerel, and tuna across various preparations.

Serve directly on toast with good butter or alongside a simple green salad dressed with lemon juice. The oil in the can is worth using as a dressing on its own — spoon it over boiled potatoes or white beans. Also works well in a classic Nicoise with haricots verts, hard-boiled egg, and brined olives.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Lucas

Luças & C.ª, Lda. was founded in 1896 and is based in Matosinhos, Portugal. The company has remained family-run through its entire history and has been producing award-winning conservas since 1940. It describes its product range as 100% natural, free of additives and preservatives.

Luças follows the traditional Portuguese canning method: fish are selected by hand, pre-cooked by steaming, and then packed with olive oil and salt before sealing. The cannery sources white tuna from Portuguese Atlantic waters. The tuna fillets in extra virgin olive oil are packed with EVOO from Casa de São Miguel, a named Portuguese olive oil producer.

Wine region

Matosinhos, Porto District, Portugal

Matosinhos is a coastal city immediately north of Porto, anchored by the Port of Leixões — one of Portugal's largest seaports and its primary northern fishing hub. The Atlantic waters off the Portuguese coast are fed by cold, nutrient-rich currents that historically supported large populations of sardines, mackerel, and migratory tuna species. The city's proximity to these fishing grounds drove a major concentration of canning factories there from the late 19th century onward.

Portugal's canning industry began in Setúbal in 1854 and expanded rapidly through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1938, Portugal operated approximately 152 fish canning factories, many supplying preserved protein to Europe during the World Wars. Matosinhos alone once housed over 50 canneries. Today a fraction of that number remains, but total export volume has increased due to modernized production. Northern Portugal, specifically the Matosinhos-Póvoa de Varzim corridor, remains the country's primary center for canning small pelagic Atlantic fish.
