Tasting notes

This is a cool-climate Syrah that leans toward black pepper, violet, and dark fruit rather than jammy weight, reflecting the Van Duzer-cooled vineyards of the Eola-Amity Hills. The collaboration between two Oregon-rooted winemakers with different instincts pulls the wine in an interesting direction: earthy and food-friendly without being austere.

The Great Pretender is a collaboration between Andrew Young of St. Reginald Parish and Adam Smith, then working in the Eola-Amity Hills and now Director of Winemaking at Skinner Vineyards in El Dorado County, California. The two shared production space in Eola-Amity and the wine reflects both of their sensibilities: Smith's inclination toward fruit presence and texture, and Young's preference for lighter, more drinkable reds.

Syrah for this wine is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in Southern Oregon and the Willamette Valley. Production follows the low-intervention approach standard to St. Reginald Parish wines: native yeast fermentation, minimal additions, and no heavy-handed cellar work. The result sits closer to Northern Rhone in spirit than to big, extracted New World Syrah.

The Eola-Amity Hills AVA, where this wine was made, is defined by cool afternoon winds funneling through the Van Duzer Corridor in the Coast Range. Those winds drop temperatures sharply during late summer afternoons, preserving acidity in the grapes. Soils in the region are primarily shallow volcanic basalt from ancient Columbia River lava flows, mixed with marine sedimentary rock, producing concentrated fruit and firm structure.

Works well alongside roasted lamb, braised short ribs, or duck confit. The wine's acidity and pepper notes also make it a natural match for mushroom-based dishes like risotto or roasted portobello. Serve with hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or manchego.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

St. Reginald Parish

St. Reginald Parish was founded by Andrew Reginald Young, a former New Orleans rock drummer who transitioned to winemaking around 2012 after immersing himself in the Willamette Valley natural wine scene. The label's name combines his middle name, Reginald, with St. Tammany Parish, the Louisiana neighborhood where he grew up.

Young sources fruit from established vineyard sites across Oregon and works with minimal additions in the cellar. His standard toolkit includes native yeast fermentation and, on lighter wines, carbonic maceration. All fruit is sourced rather than estate-grown, allowing him to select sites suited to the style of each wine. Production remains small, under 1,000 cases annually across his labels.

The Great Pretender is a side-project collaboration made at a shared facility in the Eola-Amity Hills. Adam Smith, who worked extensively in the Willamette Valley at Bethel Heights Vineyard, Domaine Serene, and Shea Wine Cellars before moving to Skinner Vineyards in El Dorado County, California, contributed winemaking input alongside Young. The wine is made with minimal intervention in the cellar, consistent with the St. Reginald Parish approach.

Wine region

Oregon, United States

The Eola-Amity Hills AVA, established in 2006, sits northwest of Salem within the broader Willamette Valley AVA, covering approximately 39,200 acres with vineyards planted primarily between 250 and 700 feet elevation. The AVA's climate is directly shaped by the Van Duzer Corridor, a gap in the Oregon Coast Range that allows cool Pacific Ocean air to flow inland and drop afternoon temperatures dramatically, particularly during late summer. This thermal pattern preserves natural acidity in grapes at a stage when warmer appellations typically lose it.

Soils in the Eola-Amity Hills are predominantly shallow volcanic basalt from Columbia River lava flows over 14 million years old, combined with marine sedimentary rocks including Willakenzie series loams on western slopes, and alluvial deposits at lower elevations. The shallowness and rockiness of these soils produces small, concentrated grapes with firm structure. Primary plantings are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gamay Noir, though Syrah is also grown in the region. Southern Oregon appellations such as the Rogue Valley extend the state's Syrah-growing range into warmer continental conditions.
