Tasting notes

Flora is one of the rarest grapes in California, a Semillon-Gewurztraminer cross with an oily, low-acid texture that grounds the perfumed Muscat in this blend. Ten days on the skins adds grip and amber color without turning the wine heavy, keeping it closer to a floral, textured white than a tannic orange wine.

Take it Easy but Take it is a skin-contact white wine from Artemis Botanical, a St. Helena-based project focused on organic-farmed northern California fruit, spontaneous fermentation, and zero added sulfur. The blend is Muscat and Flora, both macerated on the skins for 10 days. Muscat comes from Acampo, in the northern San Joaquin Valley. Flora comes from Tom Rodrigues at Maple Creek Winery in the Yorkville Highlands AVA of southern Mendocino County.

Flora is a rare UC Davis cross developed in 1938 by Dr. Harold Olmo, using Semillon and Gewurztraminer as parents. It was bred to produce aromatic wines with lower acidity than other coastal California whites. In skin-contact form, it brings a slightly oily texture and structural backbone to the blend, while the Muscat drives the perfume. The producer describes the effect as Georgian amber wine on a beach day.

Artemis Botanical began as a project to make fortified and aromatized wines under an organic, hands-off approach. It has since expanded to include table wines, piquette, grappa, and amaro, all made with organically grown fruit, native yeast fermentation, and no additions including sulfur. Fruit is sourced from sites across northern California.

The floral, lightly tannic profile here works well with dishes that have some aromatic lift: think roasted chicken with herbs, a ripe washed-rind cheese, or a Thai larb where the wine's low acidity and mild grip can stand up to the heat and fresh herbs. It also holds its own alongside cured meats and grain-based salads.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Returns Policy

Producer profile

Artemis Botanical

Artemis Botanical is a small northern California producer based in St. Helena. The project began as an effort to make fortified and aromatized wines, including vermouth, under an organic farming framework and hands-off cellar approach. It has since expanded to include table wines, piquette, grappa, and amaro, using fruit sourced from sites across northern California including the San Joaquin Valley and Mendocino County.

Artemis works exclusively with organically farmed fruit and ferments spontaneously using native yeasts. No additions are made in the cellar, including sulfur, making this a zero-zero operation. The emphasis across the table wine lineup is on aromatic varieties, skin contact for whites, and minimal extraction for reds. Wines change from vintage to vintage as fruit sources and blends shift.

Wine region

California, USA

The Yorkville Highlands AVA sits in southern Mendocino County along Highway 128, geographically positioned between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the southeast and Mendocino County's Anderson Valley to the northwest. Approved in 1998, the appellation covers approximately 40,000 acres but has only around 414 acres under vine, planted almost entirely above 850 feet in elevation, with most bench-land sites between 1,000 and 2,200 feet. The defining characteristic of the AVA is its thin, rocky hill soils of gravel and ancient brittle rock, which contrast sharply with the loamy clay soils of neighboring appellations and force vines to root deeply for water.

The climate in the Yorkville Highlands is classified as Region II, with approximately 3,060 growing degree days annually. Marine air influences the area more than 50 percent of the time, and diurnal temperature swings of 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit are common during the growing season, preserving acidity and concentrating flavors. Daytime temperatures are warmer than Anderson Valley but cooler than Alexander Valley, while nights are cooler than both. The Flora fruit in this wine comes from Maple Creek Winery in Yorkville, where the property is farmed sustainably and is herbicide- and pesticide-free.
