Tasting notes

The Confine is built on one of Italy's most obscure white grapes, San Colombano (Verdea), harvested late in October from 35-40-year-old vines on tufaceous soil at the Tuscan-Umbrian border. Four to five days of skin contact gives it a chewy texture and a salinity that keeps the ripe apricot and citrus in check without tipping into oxidation.

  • Similar To: For fans of skin-contact whites who want Italian native varieties over Georgian or Slovenian orange wine styles

This two-bottle orange wine combo brings together I Cangianti Confine 2019 and a Sete orange wine, two producers working at opposite ends of central Italy with the same commitment: no additions, no filtration, no fining, zero added sulfites. Different grapes, different soils, same philosophy.

The I Cangianti Confine is made from San Colombano (locally known as Verdea), grown on a single 1-hectare plot on the Tuscan-Umbrian border near Perugia, on tufaceous sandy soils at 200-250 meters elevation. The vines are 35-40 years old, trained on spurred cordon. Grapes are harvested late in October, fermented spontaneously for 4-5 days on the skins with no temperature control, then aged 6-8 months in vitrified concrete and inox steel. Around 3,000 bottles are produced per vintage.

Sete is based in Priverno, Lazio, in the Amaseno River Valley roughly halfway between Rome and Naples. Founded in 2013 by Emiliano and Arcangelo, the project focuses on rescuing old, abandoned vineyards planted to obscure native varieties including Ottonese, Cesanese, and Bonamico. All vineyard work and cellar work is done by hand, with wild fermentation and no added sulfites.

Both wines land in the medium-bodied orange wine zone: textured from skin contact, driven by acidity, and dry across the palate. The Confine shows ripe apricot, lemon peel, and rock salt. Sete orange wines typically show tropical and citrus notes with sapid minerality.

The Confine's texture and salinity work well with dishes that have some fat and acidity to match: think grilled branzino with capers, roasted fennel with lemon, or a soft washed-rind cheese like Taleggio. Sete orange wines pair naturally with vegetable-forward dishes, roasted poultry, or herb-heavy grain salads.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Sete & I Cangianti

I Cangianti by Stoppini was founded in 2019 by brothers Luca and Matias Stoppini. Their first vintage was produced in their garage in Perugia. After searching for years for the right vineyard plot, they identified an abandoned parcel with old vines of hyper-local varieties on the Tuscan-Umbrian border and began working it immediately.

The Stoppinis farm without chemicals and maintain ground cover between rows. Their vineyards cover Prugnolo Gentile (2.5ha) and San Colombano (1ha), with additional plots of Gamay del Trasimeno. Production is small across all wines: Confine is around 3,000 bottles per vintage. All wines are spontaneously fermented, unfined, unfiltered, and bottled without added sulfites.

Sete was founded in 2013 by Emiliano Giorgi and Arcangelo Galuppi in Priverno, Lazio. Emiliano worked two vintages with Gianmarco Antonuzi at Le Coste di Gradoli before starting Sete. The project began by purchasing grapes from and renting vineyards off elderly local farmers, later taking over the farming entirely. All vineyards are worked organically, all wines see wild fermentation, and nothing is added at any stage.

Wine region

Tuscany / Lazio, Italy

The I Cangianti vineyards sit on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, on the outskirts of Perugia. The 1-hectare plot sits at 200-250 meters elevation on tufaceous sandy soils. The cellar is in Umbria while the vineyard technically falls within Tuscany, hence the name Confine (border). The climate here is Mediterranean with continental influence: warm summers allow late harvesting through October, and the elevation preserves overnight acidity.

Sete operates in the Amaseno River Valley in the province of Latina, southern Lazio, between the Monti Lepini mountain range and Circeo National Park. This area had seen widespread vineyard abandonment in recent decades, leaving scattered old-vine parcels of native varieties largely forgotten. Lazio's recognized appellations are limited in this zone, so both Sete and many of their peers work under broad IGT designations, prioritizing native variety recovery over DOC compliance.
