Tasting notes

Rusticone is Le Coste's most openly rustic label — a co-fermented field blend from volcanic soils above Lake Bolsena that delivers dark cherry, iron minerality, and dried herbs in a genuinely savory package. The tannins are firm but the acidity keeps everything lively, and a light chill sharpens the whole thing.

Rusticone Rosso is a red wine from Le Coste di Gradoli, made from a field blend of red and white grapes grown on volcanic soils above Lake Bolsena in Gradoli, northern Lazio. The name references the wine's deliberately rustic character: it is drawn from multiple parcels of varying vine age, with both red and white varieties co-fermented or blended together. Grapes include indigenous varieties such as Greghetto (the local name for Sangiovese), Montepulciano, Aleatico, and others native to the Lake Bolsena area.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. The wine is aged in neutral oak barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. Everything from harvest to bottling is done by hand at the estate in Gradoli.

The vineyards sit on iron-rich volcanic soils at elevations up to approximately 450 meters, with a climate moderated by the proximity of Lake Bolsena — not fully Mediterranean, not fully continental. The Rusticone label has historically been used by Le Coste for blends assembled from multiple harvests or parcels, giving Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clementine Bouveron flexibility to work with what the vintage provides.

Expect dark cherry, earthy minerality, firm but integrated tannins, and a savory, volcanic edge. It rewards a short decant and can handle a slight chill.

This wine works well alongside dishes with enough texture to meet its tannins: braised pork with herbs, Roman-style oxtail, or a pasta with tomato and guanciale. Aged pecorino romano or a plate of cured meats cut through the wine's earthy grip cleanly. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste di Gradoli was founded in 2004 by Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clementine Bouveron. Gianmarco grew up in Gradoli, on the northwestern shore of Lake Bolsena. Before starting Le Coste, the couple worked with several prominent French vignerons, including Bruno Schueller in Alsace, Didier Barral in Languedoc, Jean-Paul Thevenet in Beaujolais, and Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy. They met in Alsace and returned to Gianmarco's hometown to work with the local volcanic terroir and its indigenous grape varieties.

The estate covers approximately 14 hectares and includes vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, shrubs, and oaks on volcanic, iron-rich soils around Gradoli. Vines are planted at up to 10,000 plants per hectare and include both massale selections and ungrafted vines. Farming is certified organic, with biodynamic practices applied throughout the vineyard. All vineyard work is done by hand.

In the cellar, Le Coste operates out of an ancient cellar in the center of Gradoli, designed to use gravity for all rackings — no pumps are used. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Wines are made with no additions, including no added sulfites, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Aging vessels vary by wine but include neutral oak barrels and large tanks, mainly fiberglass.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lazio is a central Italian wine region anchored by Rome in the south and extending north to the borders of Tuscany and Umbria. The northern subzone around Lake Bolsena — a volcanic crater lake formed in the now-dormant Monte Volsinii — produces wines on iron-rich volcanic soils at elevations up to around 600 meters above sea level. The lake has a moderating effect on the local mesoclimate, tempering summer heat and preserving acidity in the grapes. Rainfall averages 800 to 1,000 millimeters annually, concentrated in autumn and winter, and the well-draining volcanic soils prevent vine stress from waterlogging.

Lazio is predominantly a white wine region, with Malvasia and Trebbiano (locally called Procanico) dominating production and underpinning well-known appellations such as Frascati, Orvieto, and Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone. The only Lazio DOCG for red wine is Cesanese del Piglio, in the hills south of Rome. Around Gradoli specifically, the local DOC designation is Aleatico di Gradoli, covering a sweet red made from the Aleatico grape. Most dry red wines from the area, including those from Le Coste, are labeled under the broader Lazio IGT. Indigenous red varieties in the region include Cesanese, Greghetto Rosso (Sangiovese), Montepulciano, Aleatico, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, and Canaiolo, with over 200 grape varieties documented across the region.
