Tasting notes

This is a frizzante with real grip and depth: the brief evening of skin contact on old-vine Aglianico pulls out a deeper pink and a plummy, blood-orange-driven fruit profile you rarely see in a sparkling rosé. The volcanic soils of Montemarano come through clearly in the saline mineral finish, and the lively pungent acidity keeps every sip bracingly fresh.

The Rosato Frizzante 2019 is a lightly sparkling dry rosé made from 100% old-vine Aglianico grown at approximately 500 metres elevation in Montemarano, a subzone of Irpinia in the Avellino province of Campania. Montemarano sits directly adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG zone and is one of Irpinia's most respected areas for Aglianico cultivation. The vineyards are farmed organically by hand and are planted on volcanic soils composed of ash, pumice, and mineral-rich subsoil.

The grapes are hand-harvested and spend just one evening on skins before being pressed directly into tank. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with ambient yeasts and no temperature control. The wine is then bottled before fermentation is complete, with a pied de cuve of the previous vintage's sweet Aglianico added to trigger secondary fermentation in bottle under crown cap. There is no disgorgement, leaving a light natural haze and fine sediment. No fining, no filtration, and no sulfites added.

The result is a dry, gently sparkling rosé with a deeper extraction and more fruit concentration than most frizzante styles. The 2019 shows tart red fruits, blood orange, and a saline, mineral-driven finish from the volcanic terroir. Acidity is lively and pronounced, keeping the wine fresh despite its 12.5% ABV.

Cantina Giardino is based in Ariano Irpino and was founded in 2003 by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola along with four friends, initially making wine in Pasquale Giardino's garage, hence the name. The project focuses exclusively on sourcing and preserving old-vine parcels of indigenous Irpinian varieties from growers who farm without chemical treatments.

The wine's pungent acidity and saline finish make it a strong match for fried foods, charcuterie, and dishes with bright tomato or citrus components. Try it alongside Neapolitan-style pizza, fried calamari, or a plate of cured meats and aged provolone. It also works well as an aperitivo alongside olives and brined vegetables.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino in 2003 by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola along with four partners, having started as an informal winemaking experiment in the late 1990s in the garage of their friend Pasquale Giardino, from whose name the cantina takes its name. Antonio studied food technology and then specialized in viticulture and oenology, and at the time of founding was also working as a chemistry professor. Both Antonio and Daniela are native to Irpinia.

The project was built around sourcing old vineyards of 50 years or older from contadini who had always farmed traditionally but faced pressure to abandon or uproot their land. Cantina Giardino now manages approximately seven hectares spread across sixteen parcels in Avellino province, planted with Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Coda di Volpe, Primitivo, and Piedirosso, some vines exceeding 100 years old. All vineyards are farmed organically, all work is done by hand, and vines are planted at low density, often sharing parcels with olive and fruit trees.

In the cellar, Antonio's approach varies by vintage and wine. Fermentations are spontaneous, without temperature control, and can continue for months. Vessels include handmade terracotta and sandstone amphorae and casks of local chestnut, acacia, cherry, and mulberry wood. No fining, no filtration, and typically no sulfites are added across the entire range. The winery was among a small number of Italian producers who established no-addition winemaking practice in the early 2000s.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia is the mountainous inland territory of Campania in the province of Avellino, situated well away from the coast at elevations regularly exceeding 400 metres, with the best vineyard sites reaching 500 to 700 metres. The climate is continental in character, with cold winters, warm summers, and a long dry autumn that allows late-ripening Aglianico to reach full maturity while retaining high natural acidity. The soils are a mix of volcanic ash, pumice, calcareous clay, and limestone, the result of ancient volcanic activity in the Campanian Apennines, giving wines from the area a distinct saline, mineral character.

The province of Avellino holds three DOCGs: Taurasi for Aglianico-based reds, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo. Taurasi DOCG, which earned that status in 1993, is the most celebrated and requires a minimum of three years aging prior to release with at least one year in oak. Montemarano, the subzone from which Cantina Giardino sources grapes for the Rosato Frizzante, sits in the higher, cooler section of the province directly adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG boundary. Beyond Taurasi, the broader Irpinia DOC classification covers Aglianico and other indigenous varieties in more approachable, earlier-drinking expressions.
