Tasting notes

The ripasso technique gives this rosato a texture and depth you do not usually find in skin-light pinks: there is grip from the red grape skins, mineral salinity from the volcanic soil, and a floral lift from the Aleatico that keeps it fresh. It sits between a structured white and a pale red, which makes it genuinely versatile at the table.

Ripazzo Rosato is a field-blend rosato from Le Coste in Gradoli, northern Lazio, produced from Procanico, Malvasia, and Aleatico grown on iron-rich volcanic soils at roughly 450 meters above sea level above Lake Bolsena. The name is a pun on ripasso and pazzo (Italian for crazy): white grape juice is passed over red grape skins, giving the wine its salmon-pink color and light tannic grip without making it a full red.

Grapes are hand-harvested from organically and biodynamically farmed vines planted at up to 10,000 plants per hectare, a mix of massale selections and ungrafted old vines. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in an ancient cellar in the center of Gradoli village. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with no added sulfites.

The volcanic soils here derive from the dormant Vulsini complex, the same system that formed Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic crater lake in Europe. The lake moderates temperatures, moderating the growing season and preserving natural acidity in the grapes. Procanico (local Trebbiano Toscano) and Malvasia provide the aromatic backbone; Aleatico contributes floral red-fruit character.

Drink it lightly chilled. This is a wine built for the table, not the cellar.

Works well with fried lake fish, as local tradition pairs it with the pesciolini fritti of Lake Bolsena. Also good alongside antipasti of cured meats, fresh pecorino, or a plate of grilled vegetables with olive oil. The bright acidity handles tomato-based dishes cleanly.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste was founded in February 2004 when Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron purchased three hectares of abandoned vineyard and olive land in Gradoli, northern Lazio. Antonuzzi is from Gradoli; Bouveron is from Lyon. The couple met while working for Bruno Schueller in Alsace and also spent time with René-Jean Dard and François Ribo in the northern Rhone before returning to Gianmarco's home region.

The estate has grown from the original 3 hectares to 14 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, and oak forest. Vineyards sit at approximately 400 to 600 meters elevation on iron-rich, loose volcanic soils derived from the Vulsini complex. Vines are planted at densities of up to 10,000 plants per hectare, trained as low bush vines on chestnut posts. The mix includes massale selections and ungrafted vines. Clémentine leads the farming, which follows certified organic and biodynamic principles. Bouveron and Antonuzzi cultivate ancient indigenous varieties including Procanico, Aleatico, Roscetto, Malvasia, Greghetto (the local Sangiovese), and Canaiolo, alongside more recently planted international varieties.

Winemaking takes place in a 400-year-old cellar in the center of Gradoli village, designed so all rackings use gravity rather than pumps. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. Depending on the wine, vessels include stainless steel, resin tanks, and neutral oak. No additions are made at any stage, including sulfur. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The cellar approach draws on the Burgundian discipline Antonuzzi absorbed in France, applied to the rustic indigenous varieties of Lazio.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lazio is a large central Italian region stretching from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian coast, with Rome at its center. Winemaking here predates the founding of Rome: the Etruscans were cultivating vines in northwestern Lazio before 753 BC, and the volcanic soils they farmed still define the region's best growing areas. The northern sector, anchored by the dormant Vulsini volcanic complex and Lake Bolsena, is the largest volcanic crater lake in Europe, producing wines with a distinctive mineral profile driven by porous, iron- and potassium-rich tufo soils.

Lazio has 3 DOCGs and approximately 27 DOCs. The best-known appellations are Frascati and Frascati Superiore DOCG in the Castelli Romani hills southeast of Rome, and Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOC in the north, which encircles Lake Bolsena across seven communes including Gradoli. That DOC is built on Trebbiano Toscano (Procanico), Trebbiano Giallo, and Malvasia Bianca. The rare sweet red Aleatico di Gradoli DOC, covering fewer than 3 hectares in practice, is produced in the village of Gradoli itself. Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, in the Frosinone hills to the southeast, is Lazio's most serious red appellation. Many natural producers in the region, including Le Coste, declassify to Vino da Tavola to avoid DOC restrictions on winemaking.
